NOTES: Gorman wrestler Hernandez honored

Bishop Gorman senior wrestler Steven Hernandez has been named the Nevada winner of the Dave Schultz High School Excellence Award.

Hernandez, a 152-pounder who has signed with Boise State, finished the season 40-2 and became the eighth wrestler in Nevada history to win a fourth state title.

The award is named in honor of the late Schultz, who won an Olympic gold medal in freestyle wrestling in 1984. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame and Museum made the selections.

Hernandez has been invited to attend a leadership camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., from June 14 to 17.

CORONADO RANKED — Coronado’s boys volleyball team has scarcely been challenged this season, storming to a 15-0 record, including an 11-0 mark in Southeast League play.

The Cougars, who have swept 12 matches, are beginning to get noticed nationally. Coronado is ranked No. 45 in this week’s ESPN RISE Volleyball Fab 50.
