ROUNDUP: Coronado blasts defending champs in season opener

Chris Andrulis had eight kills and five digs to lead Coronado’s boys volleyball team to a 25-13, 25-14, 25-16 home victory over defending state champion Palo Verde in the season opener for both squads on Thursday.

Bryan Arana added seven kills and five digs, and Hunter Chaney dished out 17 assists and five digs for the Cougars.

Drew Topham led the Panthers with seven kills and six digs. Sean Wilson had 15 assists for Palo Verde.

Western 3, Mojave 1 — At Western, Nash McIntosh had 20 assists, and Aaron Buckley had 11 kills to help the the Warriors rally past the Rattlers, 16-25, 25-19, 25-10, 25-20.

D’Andre Brown had eight kills, and Kentrell Washington added seven kills for Western.

Mojave’s Jerome Hill had 12 digs, and Demarge Boyd added seven kills for the Rattlers.

Arbor View 3, Green Valley 1 — At Arbor View, Kirby Mengert had eight kills and 16 digs to lead the Aggies past the Gators, 25-7, 25-16, 18-25, 25-17.

Jesse Morgan added 15 digs, and Richie Garness had 23 assists for Arbor View.

Del Sol 3, Cheyenne 1 — At Cheyenne, Aaron Rife had 15 kills and four blocks as the Dragons topped the Desert Shields, 25-18, 25-17, 19-25, 25-15.

Eric Beil had 14 kills and five digs, and Nick Maglaras added 39 assists for Del Sol.

Clark 3, Valley 0 — At Clark, David Samson dished out 22 assists to lead the Chargers to a 25-23, 25-16, 25-19 win over the visiting Vikings.

George Huang had eight kills and four blocks for Clark, and Matt Ruedas added eight kills for the Chargers.

Tech 3, Chaparral 0 — At Tech, Mikey Maglich had six kills and four aces to help the Roadrunners to a 25-18, 25-12, 25-19 win over the Cowboys.

Eddie Lopez added 12 assists and three aces for Tech, and teammate Abel Hernandez had three kills.

Liberty 3, Desert Oasis 0 — At Liberty, Paul Acluba had 19 assists, and Brandon Reano had eight kills and seven blocks to lead the Patriots to a 25-18, 26-24, 25-11 win over the Diamondbacks.

Tonny Zhou added four kills for Liberty.

Desert Oasis’ Zach Bobenhausen had five blocks and six kills, and Trevor Stegall added 11 assists for the Diamondbacks.

Silverado 3, Sierra Vista 0 — At Sierra Vista, Casey Hadland had 15 assists and eight digs to lead the Skyhawks to a 25-10, 25-17, 25-18 road win over the Mountain Lions.

Brian Theophil added five digs and four kills for Silverado.

Shadow Ridge 3, Bonanza 0 — At Shadow Ridge, Jeremy Makaiwi dished out 33 assists to lead the Mustangs to a 25-16, 25-14, 25-23 win over the Bengals.

Taylor Lancaster had 16 digs and 12 kills, and Jake Shea added 14 kills and 14 digs for Shadow Ridge. 

Rancho 3, Basic 0 — At Basic, Antonio Boucher had 10 kills and five aces as Rancho downed the Wolves, 25-20, 25-19, 25-17.

Kevin Plascencia added eight kills and five aces, and Kamran Baig had 18 assists for the Rams.
