ROUNDUP: Cucullu, Coronado boys tame Bengals

Tyler Cucullu recorded nine kills, and the Coronado boys volleyball team defeated host Bonanza 25-15, 25-11, 19-25, 25-10 on Thursday in a matchup of the last two Class 4A state champions.

It was the season opener for both teams.

Connor Stephenson had 20 assists and two aces for the reigning state champion Cougars. Max Osmundson chipped in with seven kills.

Kavanaugh Buck finished with seven kills and five blocks to lead the Bengals. Brian Clow had five kills and eight digs, and Adam Puckoris contributed 12 digs for Bonanza.

Legacy 3, Green Valley 2 — At Green Valley, Tanner Compton had 16 kills and four blocks, and Trent Compton added 16 kills and five aces to help the Longhorns outlast the Gators, 25-21, 25-15, 25-27, 22-25, 15-8.

Braden Liu had 36 assists and five aces, and Zaire Franklin added eight kills and two blocks for Legacy.

Jake Johnson had 15 kills and three aces, and Arvin Nitollana dished out 21 assists for the Gators.

Brian Ellington added three kills and three blocks for Green Valley.

Shadow Ridge 3, Liberty 0 —
At Liberty, Jalen Makaiwi distributed 25 assists as the Mustangs swept the Patriots, 25-16, 25-16, 25-18.

Richard Sterling had 15 kills, and A.J. Makaiwi served four aces for Shadow Ridge.

K.J. Otuafi and Brandon Baliza each had four kills for Liberty.

Sierra Vista 3, Rancho 1 — At Sierra Vista, Tylor Sullivan dished out 23 assists, and Srdjan Cvijetic had 11 kills to lift the Mountain Lions past the Rams, 25-18, 25-23, 20-25, 25-20.

Clyde Balagtas had eight kills, and Tyler Hollings added seven kills for Sierra Vista.

Aaron Robles paced Rancho with 16 assists and two kills. Darnel Gorme added six kills and three digs, and Jeff Rebibes had five kills and five digs for the Rams.

Arbor View 3, Desert Oasis 1 — At Desert Oasis, Chris Heron dished out 28 assists to help the Aggies past the Diamondbacks, 25-19, 20-25, 25-14, 25-22.

Brian Porter contributed nine kills for Arbor View, which received four blocks apiece from Darien Bradley and Kaneen Manuel.

Canyon Springs 3, Sunrise Mountain 0 —
At Sunrise Mountain, Immanuel Tufuga had six kills, five digs and three aces as the Pioneers swept the Miners, 25-12, 25-14, 25-11.

Carl Esteban added 12 assists for Canyon Springs.

Ricco Lucas led Sunrise Mountain with 14 assists to go along with two kills.

Tech 3, Durango 1 —
At Durango, Joshua Wood had 25 assists, four kills, three aces and two blocks to help the Roadrunners post a 25-20, 25-19, 21-25, 25-23 victory over the Trailblazers.

Tyler Gardenhire added 11 kills and two blocks, and Omar Mena had five kills, five aces and four assists for Tech, which got five kills and four aces from Julio Vargas.

Rontraye Rainey had 13 kills and seven blocks, and Paris Estrada added seven kills and seven blocks for Durango. Pedro Abrego had 17 assists, and Jimmy Cullors contributed 11 digs for the Trailblazers.

Basic 3, Cheyenne 1 — At Cheyenne, John Pacheco-Galindo supplied seven blocks for the Desert Shields, but it wasn’t enough as the Wolves notched a 25-18, 15-25, 25-6, 25-18 win.

David Gonzalez-Beltran had three kills and three blocks, and Brandon Bonnetts dished out five assists to lead Cheyenne.
