VOLLEYBALL: Coronado boys down Foothill to claim Southeast’s top seed

Tyler Cucullu had 16 kills, 12 digs and five blocks, and Connor Stephenson added 41 assists and seven blocks Wednesday as Coronado’s boys volleyball team wrapped up the Southeast League’s No. 1 seed for the Sunrise Region tournament with a 24-26, 25-17, 25-18, 25-22 victory over visiting Foothill.

The Cougars and Falcons each finished 9-1 in the league and split 3-1 matches, but Coronado outscored Foothill 190-175 in those matches to win the tiebreaker.

Matt Pettit had 16 kills and eight digs, and Coltin Romney had 13 digs and three aces for Coronado, which got seven blocks from Christian Lucas.

Kendell Andrews paced Foothill with 13 kills, 13 digs and four blocks. Chansten Chow had 14 kills and four blocks, and Taeg Williams dished out 38 assists for the Falcons.

Bishop Gorman 3, Bonanza 2 — At Bonanza, Amadeus Sowa had 18 kills, 12 digs and six blocks to help the Gaels rally for a 19-25, 12-25, 25-22, 25-14, 15-11 victory over the Bengals.

Tony Pitaro added 17 kills, 14 digs, three blocks and two aces, and Cody Tom had 44 assists and seven digs for Gorman, which got 16 digs from Jason Han.

Centennial 3, Legacy 0 — At Legacy, Julian Lupo tallied 36 assists, and Blake Frischknecht had 21 kills and three blocks to help the Bulldogs wrap up the Southwest League title with a 25-18, 25-20, 27-25 sweep of the Longhorns.

Hunter Stratton had nine kills and four digs, and Cameron Hanselman added seven kills and three aces for Centennial.

Tanner Compton recorded 20 digs, 11 kills and five blocks, and Trent Compton supplied 11 kills and eight digs for Legacy.

Eldorado 3, Liberty 1— At Liberty, David Tran compiled 20 digs and 16 kills, and Michael Thomas dished out 46 assists as the Sundevils beat the Patriots, 25-23, 25-15, 21-25, 25-22.

Cody Ence tallied 16 digs, Dakota Schultz spiked 14 kills and Michael Ahn supplied nine blocks for Eldorado.

Braden Cabias had 26 assists, and K.J. Otuafi notched 12 kills for Liberty, which also got five kills from Alex Tejada.

Tech 3, Sunrise Mountain 0 — At Sunrise Mountain, Tyler Gardenhire finished with 12 kills and two digs, and Josh Wood added six kills, 19 assists and four digs in the Roadrunners’ 25-21, 25-14, 25-16 victory over the Miners.

Omar Mena posted eight kills and three digs, and Bryan Catenza chipped in with six kills and six digs for Tech. Teammate Miguel Garcia notched three kills, 11 assists, five digs and four blocks.

Basic 3, Del Sol 0 — At Del Sol, Taylor Dyer had eight assists, and Will Fitzpatrick had two kills to help the Wolves sweep the Dragons, 25-18, 25-23, 25-16.

Juan Mendoza tallied 10 digs and four blocks, and La’akea Cabanas supplied seven kills for Del Sol.

Chaparral 3, Desert Pines 0 — At Desert Pines, Pierce Morgan dished out 24 assists to lead the Cowboys to a 25-18, 25-12, 25-15 sweep of the Jaguars.

Josiah Wagge provided eight aces and six kills, and Jesus Botello had 10 digs and six aces for Chaparral.

Bryan Garcia had 12 digs and 10 assists, and Travis Nofoa notched nine kills to lead Desert Pines.

Desert Oasis 3, Cimarron-Memorial 0 — At Cimarron, Austen Becker tallied 18 kills, and Heron Vasquez supplied 14 digs as the Diamondbacks swept the Spartans, 25-20, 25-14, 25-17.

Nate Noor had 12 digs and five kills, and Reese Austin added six kills for Desert Oasis.

Nate Starlin had 16 assists, and Taylor Larsen provided five kills and four digs for Cimarron, which also got six kills and two digs from Efrain Ambriz.
