DIVISION III: Davis, Calvary Chapel top Mustangs to win title

Brooke Davis racked up 26 assists, 32 digs, three kills and three aces Saturday to help Calvary Chapel outlast The Meadows, 25-22, 25-17, 18-25, 20-25, 15-13 in the Division III Southern League volleyball championship match at Laughlin.

Deja Harris added 17 kills, 11 digs and two blocks, and Athena Lewis had 16 digs for the Lions, who appeared to be on their way to their second sweep of the day after downing Lincoln County, 25-21, 25-15, 25-13 in the semifinal.

But the Mustangs (20-12) battled back and sent the match to a fifth set by forcing Davis to hit the first ball, taking her out of her setting position.

“The Meadows had a great game plan, and they executed it well,” said Calvary Chapel coach Nick Davis. “They kept the first ball in Brooke’s hands and made it difficult for us to run our offense.”

Kayla Johnson had 10 digs, and Alexis Harris added six kills for Calvary Chapel, which pulled off a sweep of the Southern League’s regular-season and tournament titles for a second straight year.

“It’s really good because this team is still very young,” Nick Davis said. “We still have a tremendous upside, and we’re gaining experience.”

Alex Hall had 21 kills and 44 digs in the title match to lead the Mustangs. Nikiki Lenardson added 13 kills, and Victoria Onufrieff had 30 digs for The Meadows, which got 24 assists from Lena Schulhofer.

Against Lincoln County, Brooke Davis had 31 assists and six digs, and Deja Harris added 18 kills, six digs and four blocks.

Both The Meadows — a 26-24, 25-21, 25-21, winner over Lake Mead in the semifinals — and Calvary Chapel advance to next weekend’s state tournament in Reno.

Hall had 10 kills and 16 digs to lead The Meadows in the Lake Mead match. Amber Peterson added seven kills and 12 digs for The Mustangs, and Schulhofer added 13 assists and 10 digs.
