Western’s girls volleyball team managed just six wins last season.
The Warriors got almost that many this weekend.
Western completed a 5-1 opening weekend by winning its own Warrior Classic tournament on Saturday. The Warriors defeated Agassi Prep 2-1 in the title match.
“This really gives our girls some confidence,” said Western coach Ryan Bradshaw, whose team won three 2-1 matches in bracket play on Saturday after winning two of its three pool-play matches Friday.
After beating Tech in the quarterfinals, the Warriors dropped the first game to Clark before rallying for the win.
“The girls battled all day,” Bradshaw said. “It was good to get all these teams some experience early in the season. That was really the goal of this tournament.”
Agassi Prep won its first five matches, including a pool-play victory over Western, before falling in the final.
Western’s Michelle Simon was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Also named to the all-tournament team were: Western’s Daresheoun Lee and Brandi Jackson, Agassi Prep’s N’Dea Cottrell and Bree Coffee, Mojave’s Cheree Davis and Clark’s Xondria Brown.
