ROUNDUP: Gaels take second in bracket at Nike tourney

Bishop Gorman’s girls volleyball team won two matches Saturday and settled for second place in the Bronze Bracket of the Nike Tournament of Champions in Phoenix.
The Gaels opened the day with a 25-20, 25-16 win over Thatcher (Ariz.) and followed it up with a 25-14, 26-24 victory over Florence (Ariz.) in the semifinals.
Clovis West (Calif.) handed the Gaels a 25-14, 16-25, 15-11 loss in the final.
Faith Lutheran finished eighth in the Bronze Bracket, falling to Florence (23-25, 25-22, 15-6) and Thatcher (25-22, 25-19) before dropping a 25-21, 25-17 decision to Sabino (Ariz.).
Against Florence, Kelsey McCourt had 29 assists and five digs, and Sam Leonard added six kills and six digs for Faith Lutheran. Taylor Richards spiked eight kills, and Lindsay Flangas collected seven digs for the Crusaders.
Against Thatcher, McCourt compiled 10 assists and five digs, and Leonard supplied five aces and four blocks for Faith Lutheran, which got four kills from Courtney Hansen.
Against Sabino, McCourt dished out 18 assists, and Taylor Hammer had seven kills and two blocks for the Crusaders.
Arbor View took seventh in the Sapphire Bracket. The Aggies lost a 25-20, 25-21 verdict to Northwest Christian (Ariz.) and a 21-25, 25-20, 15-12 decision to Perry (Ariz.). Arbor View bounced back to beat Sunrise Mountain (Ariz.), 25-16, 18-25, 20-18.
Needles 2-2, Mountain View 1-0 — At Mountain View, Dee Russell posted 13 kills as the Mustangs won the opener 25-19, 24-26, 15-5 and took the nightcap, 25-19, 25-17.
Holly Laswell added 11 kills, and Kaylee Calderon had eight kills for Needles.
