SMALL SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL: Truckee rallies to top Moapa Valley for 3A title
November 12, 2016 - 7:28 pm
RENO — Maia Dvoracek had 16 kills, 17 assists and 13 digs as Truckee rallied for a 19-25, 25-14, 19-25, 25-21, 15-9 win over Moapa Valley in the Class 3A state championship match at Damonte Ranch on Saturday.
Madison Bromley had 15 kills and five aces for Truckee (27-6).
Eden Whitmore led Moapa Valley (27-11) with 15 kills and two blocks. Aria Messer had 16 assists and four kills, Jaylea Blasingame had seven kills and three aces, and Kessa Evans had 19 digs for the Pirates.
Moapa Valley coach Mandie Matheson said the Pirates played better than they had in beating Dayton in Friday’s semifinals.
“We came to play today, no doubt,” she said. “But we got into a little bit of a matchup issue, and we had a shorter offensive lineup at the end than we would prefer at the end of a championship game.”
With both teams having success in setting up their hitters, both coaches said the difference was that Truckee was more successful when plays broke down.
“They most certainly (were) able to take scattered play and make the most of it better than we were,” Matheson said.
CLASS 2A
Malia Lee ahd 14 kills and five aces as Calvary Chapel ended Yerington’s run of three consecutive state championships and claimed its first state title with a 25-21, 18-25, 25-15, 25-21 win in the Class 2A title match.
“Yerington has been the class of our division for a few years, so to go through them is fitting,” Calvary Chapel coach Nick Davis said. “They’re the best, and you should have to beat the best to win it. This is huge, not just for our volleyball program, but for Calvary athletics.”
Olivia Kaiser had 11 kills, three blocks and 25 digs for Calvary Chapel (30-5). Talina Inguanzo had seven kills, Michaela Odom had 18 digs and Lexi Davis had 29 assists for Calvary Chapel.
Lindsay Mattice had 11 kills, and teammate Ashley Rife had 10 kills, three blocks, 14 digs and 14 assists for Yerington (29-8).
“It means so much,” Lee said. “We wanted to play them and not Meadows. It’s really big.”
CLASS 1A
Madison Harris had 11 kills and four aces as Pahranagat Valley increased its state record with its 18th state title Saturday afternoon, beating Owyhee 25-19, 25-14, 25-13.
“It never gets old,” Panthers coach Ginger Whipple said. “It’s a cliche, but really it doesn’t, because they’re different groups every year and you want it as bad for every girl.”
Karley Whipple added nine kills, Allyse Frehner had 21 assists and Morgan Harris had 13 assists for Pahranagat Valley (23-6).
Kaira Egan had 10 kills to lead Owyhee, and Destiny Sky Pete had 13 assists for the Braves (16-4-1).
Pahranagat Valley has won three of the last four state titles, five of the last seven and 13 since 2000.
“There were some things we needed to clean up,” Whipple said. “Hits weren’t as consisted as I wanted. But we’ve been to State 22 years in a row, so we have some kind of tradition, and these girls know how to finish.”
