VOLLEYBALL: Lions cruise to Division III Southern League title

With her team holding an 11-0 lead in the third set of Saturday’s Division III Southern League girls volleyball title match, Calvary Chapel’s Athena Lewis wound up and served — right into the back of teammate Brooke Davis’ head.

It was one of the few things to not go right for the Lions.

Deja Harris had 13 kills, and Davis shook off the mini-headache to dish out 23 assists to help the Lions to a 25-20, 25-20, 25-12 sweep of Lincoln County in the league final at The Meadows.

“It’s always nice to kind of coast in and just enjoy it, take it all in,” Calvary Chapel coach Nick Davis said. “This team has been together for a while now. It’s nice to be able to enjoy it.”

Calvary Chapel (29-4) won its third straight league title. Lincoln County (20-11) also earned a berth in the state tournament, which begins Friday at Coronado.

Alexis Harris added six kills, and Lewis served five aces, including three during the 11-0 spurt to start the final set.

“When we’re clicking on all cylinders, we’re a tough team to defend,” Nick Davis said.

The Lions used a 12-3 spurt in the first set to turn a 10-9 deficit into a 21-13 lead. Deja Harris and Alexis Harris each had two kills, and Calvary Chapel took advantage of four Lincoln County attack errors during the run.

An 8-3 run in the middle of the second set helped the Lions to a two-set lead, and the team coasted from there.

Kaylee Teel had five kills, and Chesnee Harding added six assists for the Lynx.
