2A Southern Region: Pahranagat Valley wins first region wrestling title in 10 years

Jesse Jones, Chris Thornton, Reece Thornton and Jon Stewart each won individual titles Saturday and helped Pahranagat Valley’s wrestling team capture the Class 2A Southern Region championship at Laughlin.

It’s the first region title for the Panthers since 2008.

Jones won the 132-pound title. Chris Thornton (182), Reece Thornton (195) and Stewart (285) spearheaded a late charge by the Panthers, who finished with 168½ points to nose out Tonopah for first place. The Muckers, who also had four first-place finishers, had 156 points. Spring Mountain was third with 146, followed by White Pine with 137.

Austin Leach (106), Damian Pace (113), Dillan Otteson (126) and Kevin Pope (220) won titles for Tonopah.

Lincoln County’s Ben Culverwell (120), Beaver Dam’s Tanner Reber (145) and Lake Mead’s Dylan Auschwitz (170) also won individual titles.

The top four finishers in each weight class advance to the state tournament on Friday at Orleans Arena.
