North Las Vegas, College of Southern Nevada join forces to improve services

The College of Southern Nevada and the city of North Las Vegas have joined efforts to identify ways the Cheyenne campus can better serve the community.

CSN President Michael Richards and North Las Vegas Mayor John Lee signed an agreement Monday to form an advisory board for the Cheyenne campus.

“What we are doing here today is what I think should have happened years ago,” Lee said before signing.

The board will consist of 12 members, including Richards and Lee, who will appoint the others. The board will inform the college of trends and local needs, according to officials. It will spread the word about the college and what it has to offer, Richards said.

“We can do a better job of explaining our service to the community,” he said.

Some people in North Las Vegas don’t know much about the campus, Lee said.

“I think people know that there’s a building there, but they don’t know how to access it,” he said.

CSN and the city will work closely with the five high schools in the area to make students more aware of the opportunities at the campus on Cheyenne Avenue near Pecos Road.

“A lot of the students are smart, they just haven’t been given any direction,” Lee said of those who reside in North Las Vegas.

The advisory board will also help identify ways the college can do a better job in meeting workforce needs.
