51s ride three-run first to victory at Colorado Springs
The 51s got all the offense they would need in their first at-bat, scoring twice in the first inning in a 3-1 Pacific Coast League victory over the Colorado Springs Sky Sox on Thursday in Colorado Springs, Colo.
After rain delayed the start of the game by about an hour, Las Vegas got busy immediately, as Kirk Nieuwenhuis led off the game with a triple to right field and scored on Daniel Muno’s single. Josh Satin singled with two outs, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Brandon Allen’s single to right. 51s starter Joel Carreno gave back one of the runs, as Angelys Nina doubled in the bottom of the first and eventually scored on a wild pitch.
It would be the only run Carreno (2-5) would allow. He went seven innings, allowed three hits, struck out four and walked three. Scott Rice pitched a scoreless eighth, after Satin had led off the Las Vegas eighth with a walk and scored on Cory Vaughn’s double to right field. Zack Thornton got the final out in the bottom of the ninth for his first save, after Rice retired the first two batters.
Las Vegas continues its eight-game trip at 5:05 p.m. today in Oklahoma City, the first game of a four-game series.
