Arbor View rolls past Sierra Vista

A year ago, Arbor View's baseball team might have folded after giving up three earned runs in the fifth inning to tie a playoff game.

But the Aggies, in their second year of varsity competition, proved they were ready to win big games Wednesday night, plating seven runs in the top of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie on the way to a 17-4 rout of Sierra Vista in the second round of the Sunset Regional at Durango.

"For a two-year school, what they've done, what they've accomplished in two years, I tip my hat to the kids," Arbor View coach Gary White said. "They're an incredible group of kids."

They showed tremendous resilience Wednesday. Sierra Vista, the Southwest Division champ, scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to erase an early Arbor View lead, and it looked as if the Lions were ready to take control.

But the Aggies responded by sending 11 batters to the plate in the sixth during their seven-run outburst. Arbor View added six more runs in the top of the seventh.

"They put up the three-spot to tie it, and you could see the momentum changing," White said. "And we came back the next inning and put up the seven spot. That was just no quit in the kids."

Michael Blazek went the distance, scattering six hits and allowing no earned runs to get the win. He also blasted a two-run homer in the fifth to give the Aggies a 4-1 lead.

David McClure added four RBIs and Steven Hindle had three hits and three runs for Arbor View.

Sierra Vista plays at Durango in an elimination game at 3 p.m. today, with the winner meeting Arbor View at 6.

• Durango 16, Centennial 3 -- At Durango, the Trailblazers led 15-1 after two innings and cruised over the Bulldogs.

Ryan Kuehl was 2-for-2 with a home run, three runs scored and five RBIs for Durango, and Brad Johnson was 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs.

• Bishop Gorman 10, Spring Valley 5 -- At Centennial, Jeff Malm went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs to help the Gaels knock off the Grizzlies.

Gorman had four runs in the fifth inning -- including a Malm RBI triple -- to take a 6-3 lead.

Scott Dysinger added two hits, two runs and four RBIs for Gorman. Spring Valley plays Cimarron-Memorial at 3 p.m. today at Centennial. Gorman plays the winner of that game at 6.

• Cimarron-Memorial 10, Palo Verde 7 -- At Centennial, winning pitcher Travis Feiner went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBIs to lead the Spartans past the Panthers in an elimination game.

Zach Walters doubled, tripled and had two RBIs for Cimarron.

Alex Boncyzk had a home run, a double and two RBIs for Palo Verde.

SUNRISE REGIONAL

• Green Valley 16, Basic 8 -- At Basic, the Gators scored 12 runs in the bottom of the fifth to outslug the Wolves.

Kevin Stetham went 3-for-5 with two homers and three RBIs and Kyle Konicek was 3-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs for Green Valley, which moves to 2-0 in the tournament.

The Gators trailed 7-3 before their 12-run outburst.

Nick Feher was 3-for-4 for Basic, which hosts Las Vegas in an elimination game at 3 p.m. today. The winner of that game plays Green Valley at 6.

• Silverado 13, Coronado 8 -- At Eldorado, the Skyhawks scored 11 runs in the bottom of the third in beating the Cougars.

Kevin Rath, Jordan Keegan and Pierce Belaustegui each had home runs in the inning.

Mike McDade was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs for Silverado, and Rath, Keegan and Belaustegui each added two hits. Rath and Keegan had two RBIs, and Belaustegui drove in four.

Coronado plays Rancho in an elimination game at 3 p.m. today at Eldorado, with the winner facing Silverado at 6.

• Las Vegas 12, Chaparral 9 -- At Basic, Marvin Campbell had two home runs and three RBIs to help the Wildcats eliminate the Cowboys.

Christian Lucero added two doubles for Las Vegas.

Chris Butler doubled twice for Chaparral.

• Rancho 6, Eldorado 4 -- At Eldorado, James Cammack stole home with the bases loaded and two out in the bottom of the sixth to break a 4-4 tie and spark the Rams' win over the Sundevils.

Cammack finished 2-for-4 with a triple, and Alex Gonzales was 3-for-4 for Rancho

Phillip Garcia gave the Sundevils the lead in the first with a three-run homer.

Edgar Sifuentes then relieved Rancho starter Paul Deaver and held Eldorado to one run the rest of the way.
