Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith still on top of his trash talk game

Steve Smith Sr. is retiring after this season, his 15th in the NFL, but the Baltimore Ravens receiver's mouth shows no signs of slowing down.

After Philadelphia Eagles defensive back Eric Rowe broke up a sure touchdown pass to Smith in a joint practice Wednesday, the rookie said the veteran still talked trash.

"He told me to get my feet right. And then when I broke up the pass, he was like, 'I saw in your eyes, it looked like you (soiled) yourself,'" Rowe told NJ.com. "And I was like, 'No, man, I don't panic out here.' I expected that coming from him, but I just laughed."

On one of the final plays of practice, Smith got past Rowe — a fellow Utah product — on a fade pattern for a big gain along the sidelines. The five-time Pro Bowler let Rowe know about it by spinning the ball in front of him and the two jawed all the way back to their respective huddles.

"Oh, he talks a lot of trash," Rowe said. "I just kind of ignore it and laugh."

Smith fired a subtle parting shot at Rowe after practice while complaining about not being home for his wife's birthday.

"I'm over here doing this bull (expletive) and missing my wife's birthday. That's my honest opinion," Smith, 36, said. "I'd rather be at home singing 'Happy Birthday' to my wife, but I'm out here getting questioned to assess a rookie corner."

CHIP SHOT — Smith also jabbed Eagles coach Chip Kelly for the length of his practices. The Ravens were on the field for 30 minutes before Philadelphia showed up and the teams then practiced together for two hours. Baltimore, by comparison, practiced for three hours Monday with a heat index as high as 111 degrees.

"There's no chatter about how his practices are," Smith said of Kelly. "Have you heard about our practices? Exactly. We're three hours. This 2:15 man, this is like apple juice. It's great."
