Boise State rolls to No. 1 seed for Mountain West basketball tournament

BOISE, Idaho — Sophomore forward James Webb III posted a double-double, leading Boise State to a 71-52 victory over Fresno State on Saturday to claim a share of the Mountain West title and the No. 1 seed for the conference tournament in Las Vegas.

Webb had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Boise State (24-7, 14-4), which has won six in a row and 14 of 15. Sophomore forward Nick Duncan, junior guard Mikey Thompson and senior guard Derrick Marks scored 14 points apiece.

Junior guard Cezar Guerrero had 11 points to lead Fresno State (15-16, 10-8), which had won three in a row. Junior guard Marvelle Harris added 10.

Boise State opened the second half with an 8-0 run and grabbed a 36-19 lead on a 3-pointer by Webb with 17:31 to go. Another 8-0 run put the Broncos up 44-21 with 15:33 remaining. They led by as many as 25 points later in the half.

■ San Diego State 67, UNR 43 — At San Diego, Aqeel Quinn had 12 points and five assists, and the Aztecs (24-7, 14-4) claimed a share of the conference title by beating the Wolf Pack (9-21, 5-13).

San Diego State outscored Nevada 44-14 in the paint, dominating the frontcourt from start to finish.

Dwayne Polee II had 12 points, and Winston Shepard added 11 for the Aztecs. Marqueze Coleman was the only player in double figures for UNR, with 10 points.

■ Colorado State 75, Utah State 70 — At Logan, Utah, senior forward J.J. Avila had 29 points and 13 rebounds, helping the Rams (26-5, 13-5) rally past the Aggies (18-12, 11-7).

Junior guard Giam Clavell had 17 points and seven rebounds for Colorado State. Junior guard Chris Smith scored 24 points to lead Utah State.

The Aggies went up 68-67 on a 3-pointer by junior guard Darius Perkins with 1:06 to go, but a big basket by Avila with 55 seconds left helped the Rams complete their comeback.

■ New Mexico 52, Wyoming 49 (OT) — At Albuquerque, N.M., Obij Aget and Devon Williams scored 14 points each, and the Lobos (15-15, 7-11) held the Cowboys (22-9, 11-7) to only one field goal in overtime to earn the victory.
