Duke coach Krzyzewski gets 1,000th career win

NEW YORK — Coach K reached 1K.

Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski became the first Division 1 coach to win 1,000 games, guiding the No. 5 Duke Blue Devils to a 77-68 win over the St. John’s Red Storm on Sunday at Madison Square Garden.

“We were so gritty in the last 10 minutes,” Krzyzewski said. “It was tough to get involved with 1,000. I was just trying to survive this game, which is how you get to 1,000.”

In addition to the record number of wins, Krzyzewski led the Blue Devils (17-2) to four national championships, 13 Atlantic Coast Conference titles and 11 Final Fours. He also coached the U.S. Olympic Team to two gold medals.

Freshman guard Tyus Jones led the Blue Devils with 22 points and six assists. Center Jahlil Okafor, the nation’s top-scoring freshman, added 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Sir’ Dominic Pointer topped St. John’s (13-6) with 21 points and guard Rysheed Jordan added 18 points.
