Hawks pay homage to past with new unis — VIDEO

Coming off their best season in franchise history, the Atlanta Hawks decided it was time for a change. So they’ve unveiled new uniforms that were designed, in part, to pay homage to the team’s past — you know, the one that didn’t result in any trips to the NBA Finals and only one appearance in the Eastern Conference finals, last season. Way to think that one through, guys.

CEO Steve Koonin said he insisted the new design, more than a year in the works, have a green element to remember the team’s heritage. He called the re-design “the best of both worlds.”

The Volt Green featured on the uniforms are a flourescent version of the color worn by the Hawks in the 1970s — which, despite having “Pistol” Pete Maravich inside of them, had to be some of the ugliest uniforms ever created.

Other colors on the new unis include Georgia Granite Gray and Torch Red, which probably won’t help the Hawks avoid getting torched again next season by the Cleveland Cavaliers if LeBron James is still on the team.

The majority of voters in a poll on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s website (ajc.com) didn’t like the new look, which was designed by Rare Design’s Rodney Richardson. He said he spent time driving around Atlanta in search of the city’s identity and vibe.

“Well, he didn’t find it and he should probably keep driving until he hits the ocean, preferably on the west coast,” one reader wrote in the comments section of the uniform story on ajc.com.
