HORSE RACING
July 24, 2011 - 1:00 am
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Heidi Maria - Like the turn back in distance where she will be closing strong; flattered when Awesomemundo won next out.
3 Solar Wind - FTS has a fast worktab for her debut; like that the main man Rafael Bejarano takes the call.
Long Shot - 2 Izshelegal
Race 2 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $48,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds
7 Go Richie Go - Like seeing these shippers with eastern resumes; clearly was claimed specifically for the bonus.
5 Fifth Dimension - Found his friends last time at this reduced class level; repeat race puts him right into the mix.
Long Shot - 1 Doc Can Dance
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Depth - The key vote for me is Garrett Gomez riding; took back and closed strongly in last.
2 Golden Bounty - First time gelding is the ultimate equipment change; blinkers on and first time for a price tag.
Long Shot - 4 Fort William
Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $65,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 Ex Lover - My prediction of Chantal Sutherland flat bet profit for the meet is holding up; she is riding in fine form.
1 Pink Lemonade - Suspect can be lone early speed from the rail; see how slow David Flores can back up the field.
Long Shot - 5 Streamline Baby
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Crispy Corey - Joel Rosario had choices and opted to ride again for Ben Cecil; ground saving trip, fires late.
6 Doughboy - Ran a cropper in last but the key is Garrett Gomez remains loyal; expect a much improved effort.
Long Shot - 4 Point Mogu
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles (turf), $100,000 California Dreamin' Handicap, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
2 Tamarack Smarty - Won off a brief freshening; like that he has a good Del Mar resume, closer in a wide open affair.
1 Norvsky - Saves all the ground early, angles out in the lane late; Don Warren won the grade 1 Eddie Read on Saturday.
Long Shot - 4 Earnednevergiven
Race 7 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $63,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
1 Already There - Peter Miller has an uncoupled entry, but I like the longer priced odds; moves from outside to inside.
5 Got Even - Other Peter Miller could form a barn quinella; chased Brigand in debut, no shame in that.
Long Shot - 3 Pannettone
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf), $150,000 San Clemente Handicap, Fillies, 3-year-olds
1 Up In Time - Can improve with a ground saving journey; finished only a length behind the favorite in the Honeymoon.
5 Sarah's Secret - Beat many of these in the Honeymoon; this is a lot tougher spot than it appears, she will have to be aces.
Long Shot - 9 Mizdirection
Race 9 - 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
9 Lady Lazer - More Peter Miller love; his horses look great, run great and are well spotted to win.
1 Mona Storm - I picked a lot of horses that will save ground today; suspect her best shot is to go hard under P Val.
Long Shot - 7 Katy's Kitty
Best Bet - 7 Go Richie Go (race 2)
Del Mar Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$32.60; Long Shots, 9/1/$8.40; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.40
Del Mar Totals - 67/18/$134.40; Long Shots, 32/3/$41.20; Best Bets, 4/1/$4.40
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #3 Matt's a Giant (5/1) in race 6 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Gold Trader ran out at Saratoga. Stats - 120/74/$604.40
