Horse Racing: Sunday at Del Mar, Aug. 16

Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds
8 Gucci Brown – Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low class; from the Michael Stidham barn which has been holding its own in SoCal.
9 Seek Safe Harbor – Claimed by Peter Miller at the Los Alamitos meet; gave this horse some time and drops her down lower than the $20K claiming price.
Long Shot – 4 Pocketfullofgreen
Race 2 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $50,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds
1 Wildling – Been away a full year after being claimed by A.C. Avila in his debut victory; is protected in a no claim spot, that is a strong trainer angle.
2 Classic Gent – Tepid chalk in a very difficult heat; like that Rafael Bejarano takes the call as he has been accepting a lot of mounts.
Long Shot – 5 Malibu Mogul
Race 3 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $78,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Caminetto – Trainer Bob Baffert has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor; the other horse is Cat Burglar who is being ridden by Victor Espinoza.
1 Guns Loaded – Churchill Downs invaders is making his SoCal debut under Mike Pupye; Corey Nakatani is named to ride, but he had sore ribs on Saturday.
Long Shot – 7 Red Outlaw
Race 4 – 6 ½ furlongs, $100,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Taris – Been away since December, but if she is right and tight, she is far and away the best filly in the field; workouts seem to show her good health.
7 Sam’s Sister – Mid-pack stalker can’t change her spots; expect Rafael Bejarano to sit a trip and grind late to pick up whatever he can of the purse.
Long Shot – 5 Baruta
Race 5 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 12 feet), Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
2 Sir Cal – This pick is based upon Rafael Bejarano’s knack for finding the perfect spot to be in; saves all the ground and comes flying fast late.
12 What a View – Chance to be lone early speed if sent hard by Kent Desormeaux; if he doesn’t send he might be hung out wide for most of the trip.
Long Shot – 5 Diablo Caballero
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Kristinite – Ran miserably in last, but stretching out around 2-turns can be a benefit; the angle is the early pace figures to be a lot softer.
5 Ipray – Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; just graduated for trainer Philip D’Amato who switches from Tiago Pereira to Rafael Bejarano.
Long Shot – 10 Flyin for a Livin
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 12 feet), Purse $72,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up
9 Perfectly Majestic – Flew home late to just miss in a blanket finish; Kent Desormeaux riding for his long time client Bob Hess.
2 Somethings Unusual – Won a nice race two back but was disqualified; ran OK in last but was left with too much to do late by Mike Smith.
Long Shot – 6 Grachus the Hunter
Race 8 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
6 Oh Great Idea – Ran well in career debut, but didn’t face a group as salty as these; still she has shown ability and is capable of improvement in start two.
2 Wake the Dawn – Rafael Bejarano riding this FTS for trainer Michael Stidham; she is a Candy Ride filly who has been working very well.
Long Shot – 5 C. C. Zipp
Race 9 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 12 feet), $150,000 Solana Beach Handicap, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Smoove It – The race shape could play right up her alley; there seems to be plenty of early speed where Mario Gutierrez can save ground and come firing late.
7 Kathleen Rose – Been freshened since a busy winter at Santa Anita Park; she has a lot of early speed and could get bothered by the likes of Chaulk O Lattey.
Long Shot – 6 Heat Du Jour
Race 10 – 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
12 Sir Barclay – Claimed by trainer Steve Knapp off a good second in last; these are his friends so he is kept in the same company tonight.
11 No Contingency – Claimed by Michael Pender last time; this barn is stuck on a duck so they would like nothing better than to win the finale.
Long Shot – 7 Bishamon
