Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, August 15

Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 7 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Bellamy Concerto – Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this career low level; two HOFs in Gary Stevens and Richard Mandella go for the opener.
8 Carson City Five – You don’t see many Bob Baffert babies debut for a price tag; this one is one of them, but even got dropped again down in class.
Long Shot – 5 Attack
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 12 feet), Purse $72,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Hiking – Rafael Bejarano must navigate a trip from an outside post while leaving the chute; this filly’s U.S. debut was a good one, but must move forward a step.
1 Tangelo – Has developed a decent grass resume while productive in earning paychecks; can save all the ground inside under Mario Gutierrez.
Long Shot – 2 Show Stealer
Race 3 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
7 Mt Veeder – When in doubt used the expensive Bob Baffert trained FTS; stable rider Martin Garcia is up, if you access to clocker reports, use them in this race.
8 Beaumarchais – Another FTS, this one from trainer Simon Callaghan; like that Mike Smith is up for debut, that is a solid vote of confidence.
Long Shot – 2 American League
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $22,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Dress Code – When in doubt, look and see who jockey Rafael Bejarano is riding; horse was claimed in last by Alfredo Marquez, I know the man can train.
6 Carlot Cowboy – Chance to rebound in the toughest race on the card; key vote for me is Tiago Pereira opted to ride for Bill Spawr and not A. C. Avila on the chalk.
Long Shot – 9 All Squared Away
Race 5 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
9 Public Policy – Tepid chalk sliding down the claiming ladder to this; these are his friends as none of them has shown the will to win past their maiden victory.
12 Justonemorething – His consistency is good as he’s finished in the money in 5 of 7 career starts; don’t mind the parking lot post in this elongated sprint.
Long Shot – 11 Ultimate Luck
Race 6 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 12 feet), Purse $75,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
11 Jules Journey – Must overcome a parking lot post to carve out a trip; Mike Smith doesn’t like to sit on the rail anyway, so he’ll find a spot to tuck in some.
3 Weewinnin – Chance to be lone early speed in here, which is the best bet in horse racing; he could also be aided by the turf rail out 12 feet tonight.
Long Shot – 1 Toowindytohaulrox
Race 7 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Plane Lucky – Ran very well in her career debut for trainer Peter Miller; showed good early speed and fought off all challengers until the very end.
8 Miles Sister – Cliff Sise adding blinkers on to gain a bit more speed and focus; you have a huge edge over me in seeing the tote action on the 6 FTS in here.
Long Shot – 4 Patriotic Diamond
Race 8 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 12 feet), $300,000 Del Mar Oaks, Fillies, 3-year-olds
8 Prize Exhibit – Her last two wins are proof that the blinkers on was a big help; Jim Cassidy has himself a runner and will go for 3 in a row tonight.
8 Sunset Glos – Speedy sort did all she could in the San Clemente; Gary Stevens did all he could but had no defense for the tsunami that whizzed by late.
Long Shot – 4 Sharla Rae
Race 9 – 6 furlongs, Purse $72,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 London Legacy – This is another toughie on a day where the Pick 6 could carryover; Rafael Bejarano has gotten a lot of mileage out of this Gary Sherluck charge.
2 Rule He Will – Trainer Mark Glatt tried him on turf last time to no avail; he returns to his preferred dirt surface and Gary Stevens remains loyal.
Long Shot – 10 Papa Turf
Race 10 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 12 feet), Purse $70,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Tiz Josselyn – This can provide the piece de resistance to a Pick 6 carryover; wide open turf race where whomever gets the right trip can win it.
6 Illuminant – When Rafael Bejarano stays to ride the finale, I always will put him on my ticket; this filly stretches out around 2-turns for the first time.
Long Shot – 3 Girl Downstairs
Best Bet - 8 Prize Exhibit (race 8)
Del Mar Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$27.60; Long Shots, 8/2/$23.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals - 370/84/$573.80; Long Shots, 182/26/$320.60; Best Bets, 21/8/$33.20
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #5 Wake Forest (12/1) in race 10 at Arlington Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Consumer Credit ran out at Saratoga. Stats - 118/81/$624.60; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
