Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, August 19
August 18, 2015 - 9:01 pm
Post Time 2:05 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $22,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 No Tricks for Jack – Leap of faith in trainer Robertino Diodoro off the claim; her race two back is fast enough to upset these, throw out her last.
2 Smooth Talker – Ran her best race in quite some time to upset in last; key question is can she repeat the race, if she does she’ll win again.
Long Shot – 6 Lexie Arleen
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Cadet Roni – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; draw a line thru last, it was her turf debut and she ran awful.
8 Analysis Paralysis – Another class drop, this one from the highly regarded Philip D’Amato barn; would not have to improve much to compete with these.
Long Shot – 1 Bella Sierra
Race 3 – 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $72,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Image of Joplin – He has a chance to be lone early speed, that would be huge with the turf rail up 24 feet; goes as far as David Flores can carry him.
6 Lime Rickey – Dead late closer has made 48 of 50 career starts on grass; has not one drop of early speed so he will need some help up front.
Long Shot – 5 Follow Me Crev
Race 4 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $29,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Next Right – Chance to be lone early speed if aggressively handled by Martin Pedroza; not enough jockeys nowadays send to the front.
3 Top Drawer – Claimed by trainer Hector Palma from Ron Ellis; his job will be to get this horse to run the race two back shen he nearly beat this kind.
Long Shot – 7 Prodigious
Race 5 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $72,000, Allowance, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Big Move – Rafael Bejarano had choices and opted to ride her for Tim Yakteen; his feeling must be this filly has a potentially higher ceiling.
8 Q’ Viva – Loses her regular rider Rafael Bejarano to Big Move; nothing wrong with Flavien Prat as a sub, he’s had a marvelous summer at Del Mar.
Long Shot – 6 Sidepocket Run
Race 6 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $26,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 2-year-olds
6 Frac Candy – With the big horse Texas Red bedded down at Saratoga, the Desormeaux brothers will try and make smaller hay here; key is the big drop in class.
9 Unbridled Rocket – Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this lowest rung; this first time gelding can save all the ground under Santiago Gonzalez.
Long Shot – 1 Benesh
Race 7 – 5 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), $80,000 Green Flash Handicap, 3-year-olds and up
6 Distinctiv Passion – Figures to be the speed of the speed with these; gets class relief from the grade 1 Big Crosby for this easier spot.
2 Forest Chatter – If there is any kind of pace duel up front, this horse can fly from behind; Mike Smith will sit a trip and come wide late.
Long Shot – 9 Bobby Z Man
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Ghost of Navigator – Had a legitimate excuse in last when bothered badly at the start; A. C. Avila can hit the target as well as any trainer around.
6 Santiago’s Home – Figures to be setting the early pace in this maiden claiming route race; Miguel Perez will play catch me if you can.
Long Shot – 5 Aaron Again
Best Bet - 6 Cadet Roni (race 2)
