Horse Racing: Today at Del Mar, July 24

Post Time 4 p.m.

Race 1 – 6 ½ furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

2 Jazzed – Ran a better than looked ran in turf sprint last out; her race two back easily fits with these, danger with just one step of improvement.

3 Barbs Angel – Been stuck at this level for a while for trainer Barry Abrams; been switching back and forth between dirt and turf in search of a win.

Long Shot – 1 Rush of Day

Race 2 – 1 mile, Purse $72,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

2 Chief of Staff – Tiny edge in a race with three major contenders; gets class relief from the rugged Snow Chief for this first level Cal-bred condition.

3 Missing Groom – Has never actually finished first in a horse race; was put up to first last August at Del Mar and has not gotten victory number two.

Long Shot – 6 Storm Comin Thru

Race 3 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $36,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

3 Carlos Dangerous – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; key vote is top rider Rafael Bejarano takes the call.

10 Counterplay – Has two major equipment changes going for him; trainer Vann Belvoir adding blinkers on and the ultimate change, first time gelding.

Long Shot – 4 Family Code

Race 4 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 18 feet), Purse $50,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

4 Tribal Tribute – Claimed by trainer Mike Pupye off a sharp win at Golden Gate; NoCal shippers have done very well so far this Del Mar meet.

6 Los Bambinos – Claimed out of a strong second by Robertino Diodoro; he has built up a nice stable based in multiple locations and is a danger in all.

Long Shot – 10 Mr T Bird

Race 5 – 1 mile, Purse $22,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up

7 Pefiolo – Claimed last time by trainer Richard Baltas; he’s cooled off a bit, but is tough especially when teamed with Rafael Bejarano.

1 Surfer Moon – Claimed last out by trainer Rafael Becerra; I like the rail post in 2-turn mile races on turf or dirt, short run to the first turn.

Long Shot – 9 Ten Carat Rock

Race 6 – 1 ½ miles, $100,000 Cougar II Handicap, 3-year-olds and up

3 Sky Kingdom – Would be a star in a smaller barn, but a blip in trainer Bob Baffert’s barn; caveat emptor, he has an uncoupled entry in here.

2 Cat Burglar – This is the other Bob Baffert entry; regardless of how they look on paper, Baffert horses almost never duel with one another early.

Long Shot – 5 Big John B

Race 7 – 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 18 feet), Purse $72,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up

3 Bench Light – Takes a tumble in class to run for $40K today; like that Rafael Bejarano takes the call for trainer Mike Pender, he’s live.

6 Which Market – Ran a good third in a marathon turf route at Santa Anita last out; can hold his good form for young trainer Dan Blacker.

Long Shot – 1 Tiz Dynamic

Race 8 – 5 ½ furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Filllies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

7 Let the Girl Go – Was well bet in debut when beaten at even money; can get a perfect stalking trip off the favorite and grind it out late.

2 Bella Breeze – Speedball failed as a short priced favorite at Los Alamitos; speed has not done well on the main track so far this Del Mar meet.

Long Shot – 5 Lady Regina

Best Bet - 3 Bench Light (race 7)

Del Mar Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/3/$21.60; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Del Mar Totals - 102/22/$166.60; Long Shots, 47/7/$64.80; Best Bets, 6/1/$5.00

SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #2 Loverbil (3/2) in race 6 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total.
