Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, February 7
February 6, 2015 - 8:45 pm
Post Time 12:30 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds
7 Cheap O Charlie - Ran better than looked in an even debut; exits a bullet work and picks up good speed jockey Iggy Puglisi.
3 Royal Gambler - Hope you have a lot of bullets in your holster; you’ll need them on a difficult card like this tonight.
Long Shot - 11 Signature Cat
Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, 4-year-olds and up
5 American Act - Claimed by Adam Kitchingman who is best with speedball types; has a lot of back class to handle a group like this.
6 Sheer Talent - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this new low level; has proven he can win with or without the early lead.
Long Shot - 3 Pray Hard
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
7 Cyrus Alexander - Has been a nibble machine in four career starts; Jerry Hollendorfer taking the blinkers off, adding Corey Nakatani on.
4 Secreto Primero - Rafael Bejarano rides a lot for Jerry Hollendorfer, but not in this race; sprinter stretching out.
Long Shot - 8 Nob Hill
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds
3 Battle of Evermore - Ran well in his lone start down the hillside turf course; John Sadler barn appears to be finally heatint up.
7 Discreet Prince - Speedball tries turf and the hillside course for the first time; never know when a horse really takes to it.
Long Shot - 12 Legal Authority
Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles, $150,000 Robert B. Lewis, 3-year-olds
6 Dortmund - It was a razor thin difference with Firing Line in the Los Alamitos Futurity; I believe this colt has more upside going long.
5 Firing Line - Ran his eyeballs out in a narrow loss to Dortmund in the Los Alamitos Futurity; note the jockey switch to Gary Stevens.
Long Shot - 2 Rock Shandy
Race 6 - 7 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
9 Pulling G’s - Walked out of the starting gate in last; pulled off a near miraculous win, hope it didn’t take too much out of him.
2 Whine for Wine - Likes the Santa Anita soil, but has lost twice at 7-furlongs; dangerous still with his patented late charge.
Long Shot - 11 Logan’s Moon
Race 7 - 1 1/4 miles (turf), $200,000 San Marcos, 4-year-olds and up
1 Finnegans Wake - Has taken kindly to the training of Peter Miller; with two straight graded stakes wins, he’s in dead stroke right now.
8 Dynamic Sky - Dead late closer is always at the mercy of pace; didn’t work out in last, but like having Corey Nakatani up.
Long Shot - 4 Power Ped
Race 8 - 1 1/8th miles, $500,000 San Antonio, 4-year-olds and up
5 Shared Belief - I still believe in him despite what happened in the Breeders’ Cup Classic; a gelding who we hope will stick around awhile.
8 California Chrome - The people’s horse and Horse of the Year; some of his best races have come over this Arcadia oval.
Long Shot - 1 Hoppertunity
Race 9 - 1 mile (turf), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
10 Intoxicating Move - Did everything but win last time in a solid second; she is overdue to blast by everybody in the stretch run.
2 Demonica - Will try to lead these wire to wire; regardless of the turf rail, it has been hard to win wire to wire on grass this meet.
Long Shot - 7 Our Little Hen
Best Bet - 3 Battle of Evermore (race 4)
Santa Anita Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/5/$36.80; Long Shots, 8/1/$8.20; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 426/112/$739.20; Long Shots, 215/29/$287.60; Best Bets, 26/10/$47.00
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #3 Green Mask (7/2) in race 5 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Hammers Terror ran third at Gulfstream Park paying $2.60 to show. Stats - 21/16/$96.90; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
