Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, Jan. 23
January 22, 2015 - 11:28 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
6 She’s Discreet - She received an awful ride last time and should move up under Agapito Delgadillo; wheeled back within 8 days.
9 Bernier - Ran greenly in debut, slow early, fast late; can do better just be gaining a better start from the gate.
Long Shot - 7 Fiftyshadesoffun
Race 2 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
6 Conquest Superstep - Ran a better race two back here at Santa Anita; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
1 Pure - Was beaten less than 3-lengths in her turf debut last out; returns to dirt where her race two back is fast enough to win.
Long Shot - 5 Elle Sueno
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
5 Willing to Travel - Another long shot graduate of the Eddie Logan; he broke his MSW on grass so is capable of doing better tonight.
1 Ernest Shackleton - Was 28/1 odds in his U.S. debut in the Eddie Logan, and ran like it; gets class relief but must show more.
Long Shot - 6 Southeast Asia
Race 4 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies, 4-year-olds
7 Ina Mina - Tiny edge in a really difficult heat; like the switch to Iggy Puglisi, an aggressive rider who wins at square prices.
4 Swissarella - Has been in the money in 4-of-5 recent starts; is camera shy, but is capable of springing the upset.
Long Shot - 6 She’s Flush
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $40,000, Claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
2 Grandiose Tactics - Is claim proof for new trainer Ron Ellis; like that she is well spotted in this free shot, the one to beat.
9 Camryn Kate - Like the parking lot post for going down the hillside turf course; is also shortening up in distance, another plus.
Long Shot - 1 Hugh Knew
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds
9 Sterling Wager - Tiny edge in the hardest race on the card; sprinter stretching out, would be surprised if he’s not in front.
5 Gnarly Harly - Tepid chalk ran OK in his first 2-turn route in last; might offer more staying power to grind it out late.
Long Shot - 8 Chester B
Race 7 - 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $32,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
4 Soresca - Would not be shocked to see the Pick 6 carryover to Saturday; sliding down the claiming ladder to this lower class.
6 Lady’s Plan - Tepid chalk has the edge of leading rider Rafael Bejarano; expect him to put her in the right position as usual.
Long Shot - 9 Marina Del Heat
Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
6 Push Girl - Sliding down the class ladder to this new career low; this card is fraught with danger, could see late bombs in the NHC.
3 Fabulous Fit - Been away 13-months but showed talent back then; watch the tote board for clues on the Jim Cassidy returnee.
Long Shot - 5 Vegas Bound
Best Bet - 6 Conquest Superstep (race 2)
