Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, January 29
January 28, 2015 - 9:00 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $50,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
5 Easter Fever - Edge due to winning twice, the last one over winners for a $50K price tag; figures to be decent value.
2 Bad Ju Ju - Will be overbet off a 9-length MSW win at Los Alamitos; not sure if that field was as good as advertised though.
Long Shot - 3 Exfanofsixties
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds
4 Whiskey Wild - Broke thru with a nice second last time; Jeff Mullins barn is ice cold, but can’t stay like that forever.
6 Congrats Seattle - Perfect hunch horse for the Super Bowl; sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this new low rung.
Long Shot - 2 Fabber
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
2 Rattataptap - Was grossly overmatched in the grade 2 Santa Ynez last out; beat a good Bob Baffert baby Popover in career debut.
6 Hennythelovepenny - Gets needed class relief from the Breeders’ Cup and Santa Ynez; hope that her spirit hasn’t been wounded to badly.
Long Shot - 5 Tall and Sweet
Race 4 - 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up
1 Beach Fever - Always like the rail at 1 mile on dirt or turf; short run to the first turn gives the post a real advantage.
9 Spring Action - Would like him better except for the parking lot post; has tactical speed to grab a decent spot early on.
Long Shot - 5 Crane Lodge
Race 5 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
2 See Through - Joe Talamo has had a sluggish start to the meet; when you have many more seconds and thirds than wins, that is bad.
10 Taylor Lane - Suspect she ran against much tougher foes at Keeneland; returns to SoCal where she could definitely wake up.
Long Shot - 12 Loufoque
Race 6 - 7 furlongs, Purse $21,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
1 When We Met - Returns to a more modest level tonight; was taken for $10K so Robertino Diodoro got his money’s worth off the claim.
8 Truelee Scrappin - Don’t mind a parking lot post in an elongated sprint; key is the long run until the turn to gain good position.
Long Shot - 6 Relentless Heat
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 4-year-olds and up
7 Silver Torch - The team of Kent Desormeaux and Bob Hess is winning races like it’s 1999; expect this one to wake up in a big way here.
9 I’ll Wrap It Up - Elvis Trujillo has been a nice surprise since joining the SoCal colony; with luck it may land him a big horse.
Long Shot - 5 Ten Carat Rock
Race 8 - 1 mile, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up
9 Silent Ruler - Tiny edge in the hardest race of the card; Kent Desormeaux riding for brother Keith, won’t be holding back.
6 Starzilla - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to be competitive with these.
Long Shot - 5 Arctic Code
Best Bet - 2 See Through (race 5)
Santa Anita Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/5/$35.20; Long Shots, 9/1/$12.80; Best Bet, 1/1/$7.40
Santa Anita Totals - 331/88/$586.80; Long Shots, 167/25/$249.00; Best Bets, 20/9/$40.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #3 Miss Lech (2/1) in race 8 at Gulfstream Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Wildcat Gaze won at Gulfstream Park paying $4.20 to win, $2.60 to place and $2.40 to show. Stats - 15/11/$58.40; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
