Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, June 26
June 25, 2014 - 8:55 pm
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $21,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
3 Two Is to Many - Claimed by Mark Glatt off a gutsy win for Peter Miller; Glatt need not improve him, just maintain his top form.
5 Dr Williams - Another claimed off a sharp win last out; Eric Kruljac has the same task as Glatt, just keep the mojo going.
Long Shot - 4 Mel’s Game
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
1 Yard Line - Has lost 3 in a row at odds on chalk; understand if you pass on him, but his speed figures are the fastest in the field.
3 Wrightwood - Woke up last time with a monster effort; tries 2-turns and to get trainer Mike Harrington off a 0-for-45 winless duck.
Long Shot - 5 Missing Groom
Race 3 - 1 1/2 miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), $75,000 Possibly Perfect Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Changethechannel - Like the fact she has run well in a pair of 1 1/4 mile marathons; this Belmont Stakes distance is for gallopers.
6 Customer Base - Logical chalk also exits the grade 1 Gamely for an easier spot; the key question is lasting the marathon distance.
Long Shot - 5 Phonybooksnrecords
Race 4 - 5 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
10 Sweet Mz. Poppet - Ran OK in debut for second; that one race experience provides a solid edge in a race full of FTS.
9 Soul Flyer - FTS from Julio Canani barn is bred to be quick; watch the tote board for additonal clues.
Long Shot - 8 Fab Four Ever
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Stolen Property - Tiny edge due to 3 OK turf races on his resume; this is clearly the slowest group of horses he has ever faced.
3 Surfer Moon - Tepid chalk in a wide open race; notice how the fifth race is seemingly the hardest on an 8-race program.
Long Shot - 4 Lassie’s Reward
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Sunday Rules - As hot as the Philip D’Amato barn is going, this one is dangerous off the shelf; stakes winner for retired Mike Mitchell.
5 Classy Ava - That was a clever MSW win in last; facing winners for the first time is a distinct jump up in class.
Long Shot - 8 Tappingintherain
Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $40,000, Starter Handicap $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Happybirthdaybaby - This could be a Jerry Hollendorfer exacta box; has an uncoupled entry with Heat Du Jour, so caveat emptor.
3 Heat Du Jour - Has had success down the hillside turf course; claimed by Jerry Hollendorfer off a big win, now cuts back in distance.
Long Shot - 5 Thermal Nermal
Race 8 - 5 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Philanderer - The less starts the better at this bottom level; this one showed good early speed in debut, play catch me if you can.
9 Tasha’s Courage - Big trainer change could provide a wake-up call; has some good back speed figures for Jack Carava to mine back to.
Long Shot - 1 Midnight Roar
Best Bet - 4 Sunday Rules (race 6)
Santa Anita Park Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/5/$24.80; Long Shots, 9/1/$10.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Park Totals - 580/157/$1,081.80; Long Shots, 282/39/$368.20; Best Bets, 33/10/$41.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #6 Leilani’s Ticket (10/1) in race 8 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Sunday, Jolene ran third at Belmont Park paying $3.80 to show. Stats - 97/59/$574.00; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
