Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, June 6
June 5, 2015 - 9:12 pm
Post Time 11:30 a.m.
Race 1 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Saint Dermot - His last 3 dirt starts are on the cusp of beating a group like this; should save all the ground under Tiago Pereira.
6 Northern Iowa - In a race without much pace, don’t think his lack of early speed will hurt him; just may have to move a nod sooner.
Long Shot - 3 Derby Glass
Race 2 - 4 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
5 Midvale Magic - FTS from the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer; he is winning at 29 percent with FTS, has Rafael Bejarano up too.
3 Suavemente - Ran well in a tough beat career debut; key will be if he can show improvement in his second career start.
Long Shot - 7 Tiz Love
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, 3-year-olds and up
5 Mr. Pucci - Was favored in career debut; showed strong early speed, dueled, but got run down late, will need to improve a step.
3 Hook ‘Em Kurt - Shown steady improvement in all three career starts; may be ready to bust thru for picture taking.
Long Shot - 2 Admiral Jaxon
Race 4 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), $100,000 Crystal Water, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
3 Awesome Return - After two solid seconds in open company, switch to Cal-bred stakes may be a drop in class; will come flying late.
6 Forest Chatter - Favorite has won four straight on grass, albeit down the hillside turf course; stretching out to 2-turns today.
Long Shot - 5 Lucky J Lane
Race 5 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, 3-year-olds and up
10 Fit to Rule - These cheaper claimers take turns beating one another; hate the parking lot post, but it may be his turn to win.
3 Jackson Sundown - Was overmatched in last and should enjoy this class relief; these $8K claimers are his friends.
Long Shot - 2 Accelerant
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 U S Citizen - The further out post one has, the better I prefer it down the hillside turf course; will sit and make one brush.
4 Ain’t No Other - Hard to imagine Rafael Bejarano had no business at Belmont Park this weekend; he may win a bushel of races on the card.
Long Shot - 3 Chips All In
Race 7 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Prettypreciousheir - I don’t usually pick recent graduates; however, she won so easy in last that she appears capable of a repeat.
10 Kantina Kowgirl - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low class; Rafael Bejarano has been riding many for Vann Belvoir.
Long Shot - 7 Beyond Lucky
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Attack - Claimed off a big dirt effort by Rafael DeLeon; tries turf for the first time but is surely in good form.
11 Passinaflash - Rafael Bejarano always manages to squeeze the max out of these runners; riding this one for Doug O’Neill.
Long Shot - 7 Unusually Big
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $20,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Autumn Twilight - Once again I’m picking a recent graduate in her first race facing winners; it’s a big step up in class for sure.
10 Seeking Shamrocks - Like the cutback in distance from a 2-turn mile to this elongated sprint; figures to run well once again.
Long Shot - 3 Desert Thief
Race 10 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Son of War - Has been a stride late the last few grass starts; HOF trainer Ron McAnally remains loyal to Brice Blanc.
9 The Gomper - Has shown a lot of class, but is trying turf for the first time; Rafael Bejarano and Jerry Hollendorfer again.
Long Shot - 2 Toowindytohaulrox
Race 11 - 7 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
10 Mr. Cartegena - Alex Solis has gotten enough live mounts to count on one hand; he can still ride and Richard Mandella legs him up.
2 Upbeat Tempo - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; second start off the claim by Ron Ellis.
Long Shot - 12 Gemmabeto
Best Bet - 10 Mr. Cartegena (race 11)
Santa Anita Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/6/$37.20; Long Shots, 8/1/$8.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Meet Totals - 333/90/$521.00; Long Shots, 165/27/$330.40; Best Bets, 20/9/$35.20
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #2 Wedding Toast (4/1) in race 5 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Sheikinator ran third at Churchill Downs paying $2.40 to show. Stats - 76/51/$372.10; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
