Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, March 1
March 1, 2015 - 9:36 am
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $20,000
1 Hot Market - Got a rare poor trip under Rafael Bejarano last time out; has good tactical speed and should break better tonight.
6 Gangnam Guy - Second start off a 3-month hiatus; has yet to win down the hill but is a perfect 4-for-4 in the money.
Long Shot - 10 Bobby Z Man
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Knock Em Flat - Key for me is he is a first time gelding today; has plenty of back speed numbers fast enough to defeat these.
4 City State - Exits a sharp maiden claiming win to face winners for the first time; that is always a big class rise for any horse.
Long Shot - 7 Papa Turf
Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $32,000, Starter allowance $16,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
2 Frandontjudge - Consistent sort should be able to carve out a nice trip from an inner post; she’s never won on turf, but has been close.
8 Midnight Lady - Another non-winner on grass, but under the magic touch of Rafael Bejarano; he always positions his horses well.
Long Shot - 4 Toppers Sunshine
Race 4 - 6 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
1 Medicine Butte - Trainer Robertino Diodoro is serving a suspension; suspect nothing will change in the barn with the assistant in charge.
6 Autumn Twilight - Didn’t show much in last, but the key for me is Rafael Bejarano opted to stay on; expect a much better performance.
Long Shot - 3 Myintention
Race 5 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Mr. Jay D - Private purchse by the Jerry Hollendorfer team; they have had a lot of successful acquisitions including Shared Belief.
1 Whiskey Wild - Claimed by Bob Hess out of a rousing maiden claiming victory; he legs up his main man Kent Desormeaux for the ride.
Long Shot - 7 Bourne Hot
Race 6 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
11 Faith Proof - Peter Miller knows the last win took a lot out of her; he drops her back down in class where she could win right back.
7 Tribal Peace - Big rider switch from the bugboy to Fernando Perez; he is an aggressive rider who is likes to send from the gate.
Long Shot - 4 Nothing to Hide
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
6 Danette - Been away two months but at least is facing MSW tonight; she ran in 3 straight graded stakes, hard to do for any maiden.
9 Housemaker - Interesting English import for the Doug O’Neill barn; like the hire of Rafael Bejarano and she races first time with Lasix.
Long Shot - 5 Frosty Friday
Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $20,000, Cal-breds, 4-year-olds and up
3 Head South - Exits a career best race off a 9-month hiatus for Hector Palma; key will be if he regresses, repeats or moves forward.
5 Frensham - Was grossly overmatched in the Malibu at 128/1 odds; he did run fifth which means he did earn a Malibu paycheck.
Long Shot - 6 Memphis
Race 9 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Sky Heart - Claimed by Bob Hess after a sharp second; thought he might give the mount to Kent Desormeaux, but keeps Joe Talamo up.
3 Gnarly Harly - Claimed by Wesley Ward off a pop and stop effort as the chalk; has back class resume to rebound nicely in here.
Long Shot - 8 Desert Gem
Best Bet - 3 Head South (race 8)
Santa Anita Saturday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/4/$21.80; Long Shots, 8/1/$6.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 637/168/$1,062.60; Long Shots, 320/46/$456.60; Best Bets, 39/15/$67.20
