Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, May 17
May 16, 2014 - 9:30 pm
Post Time 11:30 a.m.
Race 1 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $23,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
6 L T Reckless - Dropping in class from a stakes to a $16K claimer looks suspicious; Doug O’Neill never afraid to drop and win.
4 Parada - Another taking a big class drop to face much softer; she ran OK on turf and broke her maiden on dirt two races ago.
Long Shot - 2 Red Barris
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds and up
3 Pass the Pico - Julio Canani drops him down to the class level he claimed him at; got two paychecks, now is willing to lose the horse.
10 Bench Press - This race is full of class droppers so be wary; the winner will be the one with enough left to grind it out late.
Long Shot - 5 Shining Son
Race 3 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
1 Seeking the West - Has the best dirt resume among this 5-pack; beaten favorite shortens up from a marathong distance last out.
3 Honduran - Has cashed two paychecks since moving west from Woodbine; useful sort will take the blinkers off this afternoon.
Long Shot - 5 Kochees
Race 4 - 1 mile (turf), $100,000 American, 3-year-olds and up
1 Winning Prize - May be Neil Drysdale’s best remaining horse in the barn; won the grade 1 Kilroe in last, this has to be easier.
4 Silentio - This 5-YO runs hard every time out; has been tested against the best and makes others know they’ve been in a fight.
Long Shot - 2 Obviously
Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $26,000, Claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Explain - Lot of class droppers today; the key is the purses are higher and if the horse gets claimed too, it’s an added bonus.
2 Too Fast to Pass - Bugboy Drayden Van Dyke replaces Rafael Bejarano; Bejarano figures to be out half of the year, at least.
Long Shot - 7 Jovita’s Tuffy
Race 6 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
9 Incline Village - The parking lot post is a positive, not a negative, down the hillside turf course; will be firing fast late.
6 Remind Mee - Speedball will try and bottom out this field; the turf rail is at zero, not help there around the bend turning for home.
Long Shot - 1 Boompa
Race 7 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
13 Fifteen Black - Has to draw in off the also eligible list; ran too good to lose in last, his first at this bottom class level.
6 Slewissurfing - Has done two straight pop and stop efforts; tried blinkers on in last and went a little further and faster.
Long Shot - 9 Destino
Race 8 - 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds and up
9 Misdeed - With a long run to the first turn, this parking lot post shouldn’t be too bad; Joe Talamo needs to carve out a good trip.
7 Public Interest - This dead late closer has no early speed; will sit in arrears until the turn for home and fire fast late.
Long Shot 6 Rob’s Pal
Race 9 - 7 furlongs, $75,000 Angel’s Flight, Fillies, 3-year-olds
2 Midnight Dream - My issue with Bob Baffert is he wins when I don’t want him to, which is an awful lot; this one can rebound nicely here.
4 Satirical - Beaten favorite in the Santa Paula has no real excuse; got a nice set-up, but didn’t fire, expect better this afternoon.
Long Shot - 7 Delta Flower
Race 10 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Warren’s Jen Fizz - Sometimes I pick a horse because it looks best; times like this, the other eliminate themselves one by one.
5 Exclusive Girl - Her last two races are much improved; this field is so poor a repeat of either one may be enough to get the job done.
Long Shot - 10 Q’Viva
Race 11 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Glitter of Silver - I like playing horses that won while running a lover Beyer; California Chrome fits that bill too.
Long Shot - Cody Autrey is a welcome addition to the SoCal barn area; anything he can do to fill fields, win purse money, is welcome too.
Best Bet - 3 Explain (race 5)
Santa Anita Park Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/4/$24.60; Long Shots, 8/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Park Totals - 206/55/$333.40; Long Shots, 100/9/$102.80; Best Bets, 12/3/$9.80
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #2 Extrasexyhippzster (3/1) in race 7 at Pimlico. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Fortune Pearl ran third at Pimlico paying $5.80 to show. Stats - 77/44/$403.00; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
