Horse Racing: Today at Santa Anita, October 9
October 9, 2014 - 1:34 am
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Appealing Lady - Twice beaten favorite showed improvement in last start; like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal to the cause.
1 Artemisia - Outran her high 34/1 debut odds when third; typical green debut, off slowly but closed like a house on fire.
Long Shot - 4 Ill Tell You What
Race 2 - 1 mile, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, 2-year-olds
6 Jimbaran Bay - Sliding down the maiden claiming ladder to this lower rung; adding blinkers on for good measure.
7 Jet Trick - Tiago Pereira is a good rider who does not get bet on by the fans; rides for underrated trainer Gary Sherlock.
Long Shot - 8 Momma Tried
Race 3 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $40,000, Claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Royal F J - Chance for a minor upset in a race with a ton of early speed; class relief will also help a lot.
3 Barrel Knot - One of the speedball from a jockey who prefers to stalk the early pace; see if Rafael Bejarano can take him back.
Long Shot - 2 Great Friends Rule
Race 4 - 7 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Salsita - Claimed by Peter Eurton off a dead game second; is aggressively raised in class, but does have some back class.
4 Oeighter - No barn gives horses away, so this drop is red flag all the way; does attract a top rider in Joe Talamo, that’s a positive.
Long Shot - 2 Adellusion
Race 5 - 7 furlongs, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Go Black Tie - I like horses cutting back from a 2-turn route to an elongated sprint; will sit back and make one big brush.
6 Grand Humor - Speedy sort should appreciate the large class drop; better resume on real dirt too.
Long Shot - 1 Counting Days
Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $23,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Friendly Banter - Doug O’Neill barn has already switched to Leandro Mora as trainer of record; under Mora, they should not skip a beat.
7 Dress Code - Has run three good races since claimed by Robertino Diodoro; tactical speed to lead or sit a stalking trip.
Long Shot - 8 Street Serenade
Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $58,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Baruta - Tries dirt for the first time, but seems to train OK over it; an unlucky 6-for-6 seconds in SoCal turf racing.
2 Taste Like Candy - Returns to dirt where she won her MSW; that was at Santa Anita too, so she may like it in Arcadia.
Long Shot - 1 Fleet of Gold
Race 8 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 30 feet), Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Hijra - Lost her rider Corey Nakatani to the chalk, but Rafael Bejarano is a capable sub; tactical speed to sit a perfect trip.
6 Aguafria - This is where Corey Nakatani ended up; was favored in U.S. debut but just got going a stride or two late.
Long Shot - 7 Winning Rhythm
Race 9 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 She’s Discreet - Typical green debut, slow early, fast late; beena nice year for small trainer George Papaprodromou.
10 Here’s Bella - Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; need not be much to be competitive with these.
Long Shot - 12 Keepnherinthedark
Best Bet - 6 Jimbaran Bay (race 2)
Santa Anita Sunday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/7/$35.60; Long Shots, 9/1/$25.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Totals - 126/31/$159.80; Long Shots, 62/9/$136.20; Best Bets, 7/5/$19.00
