TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK by Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Bonus Spin - Was well backed when heavily favored in career debut; suspect the one race experience will be a big help tonight.
3 Grace Victoria - FTS from the white hot Doug O’Neill barn; exits a bullet workout, watch the tote board for additional clues.
Long Shot - 1 Spectacular Proof
Race 2 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $40,000, Starter handicap $25,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Spring Up - Gets huge class relief from the grade 3 Last Tycoon for this; also like the cut back in distance from route to sprint.
2 Tones - Did everything but win last time in a brutal result; was geared up for that effort, right back as long as he doesn’t bounce.
Long Shot - 3 Candy’s Surprise
Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Dewrag - With lots of early speed in the field, let’s pull for a dead late closer; square price with Edwin Maldonado up.
3 Southern Sunrise - This is a big class rise as he exits a NW2L for a NW3L; has early speed, but so does Innocent Man, what gives.
Long Shot - 2 Innocent Man
Race 4 - 5 furlongs, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
3 Positivo - In a race this poor, I tend to give the FTS a second, and third, look; this one working bullets for Mike Harrington.
4 Lady Dish - Of the ones with experience, this one appears best; of course, that’s not saying much at this reduced class level.
Long Shot - 1 Patty’s Place
Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), $75,000, Singletary, 3-year-olds
4 Home Run Kitten - Has been ultra consistent since switched to grass; he’s a Kitten’s Joy, so turf pedigree is no surprise here.
2 Toowindytohaulfox - Suspect either this colt of Home School will try for the early lead; aided somewhat by turf rail out 8 feet.
Long Shot - 8 Home School
Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 Mavericks Gun - Claimed by Doug O’Neill off an excruciating nose loss; the barn is white hot, subtle improvement may be enough to win.
9 No Ez Money - Looks like lone early speed, the best bet in horse racing; key is he has shown a case of the staggers late in the lane.
Long Shot - 3 Solid Wager
Race 7 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $75,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 County Lineman - This is a vote for Kent Desormeaux to carve out a trip; there is speed in here, so a stalker/closer type is dangerous.
4 Unbridled Command - Is clearly the class of the field, but has been away 16-months; plus its his SoCal debut, new surroundings.
Long Shot - 2 Horizontalyspeakin
Race 8 - 1 1/16th miles, $200,000 Summertime Oaks, Fillies, 3-year-olds
1 Jojo Warrior - They don’t know if she’s a speedball or a closer; one thing, even I can see, is she wants to go further, 2-turns today.
4 Delta Flower - Has won 3 straight, now tries 2-turns for the first time; if she wants the early lead, she can probably get it.
Long Shot - 6 Front Range
Race 9 - 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 8 feet), Purse $56,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Alexa Tangier - This is strictly a pedigree play; look at the sire Tiznow and the graded stakes winning dam Cambiocorsa, upset special.
3 Pouncerounddaclock - Ran well in career debut for Rosie Napravnik; now gets Joe Talamo who may be the king of the last race in SoCal.
Long Shot - 10 Wild Caroline
Best Bet - 5 Alexa Tangier (race 9)
Santa Anita Park Friday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/4/$21.60; Long Shots, 7/3/$25.80; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Santa Anita Park Totals - 545/146/$1,017.60; Long Shots, 265/37/$340.80; Best Bets, 31/9/$30.60
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY - #5 St. Moose (5/1) in race 6 at Belmont Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Friday, Sunbio won at Belmont Park paying $9.90 to win, $5.30 to place and 43.50 to show. Stats - 95/57/$567.50; Follow him on Twitter: @richeng4propick
