Poor fielding, bullpen keep Las Vegas winless

Chris Pettit's sacrifice fly capped a two-run eighth inning that helped give the Salt Lake Bees an 8-7 win over the 51s in a Pacific Coast League game Monday night at Spring Mobile Park in Salt Lake City.

Coming into the game, Las Vegas (0-4) had committed six errors in three games. On Monday against Salt Lake (3-1), the 51s doubled that total by making six errors.

Despite the miscues, the 51s held a 7-6 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. But Brandon Wood led off the Bees' half of the inning with a home run.

Salt Lake catcher Bobby Wilson laced a line drive to right, which 51s outfielder Jason Lane lost in the lights. Wilson ended up on third and eventually came home on Pettit's sacrifice fly.

Brian Wolfe (0-1, 6.75 ERA) suffered the loss.

The teams meet again today at 6:35 p.m.

HOCKEY

Three players return to Wranglers from AHL

The Wranglers announced that defenseman Dan Spang and forwards J.D. Watt and Mike Hamilton have returned from the American Hockey League.

Spang spent 24 games with Syracuse of the AHL, logging three goals and 10 assists.

Rookie Watt appeared in 42 games with the Quad City Flames, recording two assists and 146 penalty minutes, which ranked second on the team.

Hamilton tallied three goals and five points in 30 games for the Chicago Wolves.

The Wranglers' first-round ECHL playoff series with Bakersfield, tied 1-1, shifts to Bakersfield for three games. Game 3 is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday.

De La Hoya expected to announce retirement

With several signs indicating that Oscar De La Hoya will retire from boxing, a news conference will be held at noon today for an announcement that is being tightly guarded by those close to East Los Angeles' famed "Golden Boy."

De La Hoya, 36, is expected to confirm publicly what he told his former trainer Freddie Roach in the seconds after his lopsided defeat at the hands of Manny Pacquiao in December: "You were right, Freddie, I don't have it anymore."

Also: WBO welterweight champion Miguel Cotto said Monday that a recent brawl with his uncle at a Puerto Rico gym is a family matter, and neither one wishes to pursue a criminal case.

Police say the two exchanged blows Wednesday after a heated argument about training at the Bairoa Gymnasium in Caguas.

Witnesses said they were quickly separated, but Evangelista Cotto later drove to his nephew's home and threw a cement block through a window of the boxer's 2009 Jaguar.

Clemson men's soccer coach Trevor Adair has been arrested after police say he attacked his two teenage daughters over the weekend.

Clemson, S.C., Police Chief Jimmy Dixon says the 48-year-old Adair was released on a $10,000 bond.

Adair is charged with two counts of assault and battery.

Jurors deliberating the fate of Brazilian race car driver Helio Castroneves and two others charged with evading U.S. taxes asked for transcripts of testimony by two tax lawyers who were called by the prosecution to describe how Castroneves' finances were structured.

The 12-person jury began deliberations Friday after six weeks of testimony and did not reach a verdict Monday. They will continue today.
