Nevada boxing hall sets gala to honor first induction class
The state’s boxing community will come together Aug. 10 at the Monte Carlo to celebrate the sport with the inaugural induction class of the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.
Nineteen members make up the first class, led by Mike Tyson, Sugar Ray Leonard and Oscar De La Hoya.
“A true Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame has been long overdue, considering this state’s rich tradition in the sport,” founder and CEO Rich Marotta said. “The NVBHOF is ready to honor the significant contributors to boxing in Nevada.”
The inaugural class comes from eight categories — Nevada resident boxers, non-Nevada resident boxers, trainers, promoters, officials, media, executives and special contributors.
In addition to Tyson, Leonard and De La Hoya, Larry Holmes, Julio Cesar Chavez, Diego “Chico” Corrales and Mike McCallum will be inducted in the two boxer categories, Eddie Futch and Freddie Roach are going in as trainers, Bob Arum and Don King as promoters, Mills Lane and Joe Cortez as officials, Marc Ratner and Dr. James Nave as executives, Royce Feour and Al Bernstein as media and Kirk Kerkorian and Sig Rogich as special contributors.
In addition to the induction ceremonies, the hall will announce its male and female professional Fighter of the Year, its Nevada Fight of the Year and its Nevada Prospect and Amateur of the Year.
Tickets, priced at $150 and $250, which includes dinner and a seat for the gala, go on sale Monday. Tables of 10, priced at $2,500 and $1,500, are also available. In addition, a limited number of $50 general admission tickets that do not include dinner will be available. Tickets can be purchased through the hall’s website — NVBHOF.com.
