California golfer wins in Primm
May 17, 2007 - 9:00 pm
Mark Ewing, a day trader from Newport Beach, Calif., bested everyone else in the final fivesome Wednesday to win the inaugural World Series of Golf at Primm Valley Golf Club.
The event combined the skill of golf with the wagering format of Texas Hold 'Em poker, with competitors paying a $10,000 entry fee for the three-day tournament.
Ewing knocked out poker pros Phil Ivey and Rhett Butler by going all-in on his approach shot at the par-4 16th hole. He chipped onto the green and hit a 3-foot putt to win the hole and the $250,000 first-place prize.
