Coronado claims Spring Bash

Coronado's Ryan McIntyre hadn't seen much time on the mound this season, but the junior right-hander couldn't have played a bigger role on Wednesday.

McIntyre pitched a three-hitter to lead Coronado to a 1-0 win over Cleveland (Calif.) for the Purple Division 3 championship in the Blazer Spring Bash at Sierra Vista High School.

"When you play five ballgames in three days, it's about pitching," Coronado coach Adam Maxwell said. "Ryan McIntyre, he's thrown one inning all year. And we've just had different guys stepping up all year."

McIntyre gave up two first-inning singles but didn't allow another hit until the seventh.

He also got some help from his defense, as the Cougars turned two double plays, including an unusual one to preserve the lead in the fifth.

Two walks and a throwing error put runners on second and third with one out. Cleveland's David Bierman lifted a fly ball to shallow center. Brandon Evans made a diving catch, then threw a strike to home plate to gun down Alex Gast to end the inning.

The game's only run came in the top of the first. Ben Morris led off the game with a triple and later scored on a passed ball.

• Coronado 6, Huntington Beach (Calif.) 5 -- At Sierra Vista, Morris scored on a throwing error in the top of the seventh to give the Cougars the win in the semifinals.

Jake Wagner and Jordan Blanchard each had two hits for Coronado.

• Vista Murrieta (Calif.) 4, Las Vegas 2 -- At Las Vegas, the Broncos scored twice in the top of the seventh to beat the Wildcats in the Purple Division 2 championship game.

D.C. Legg singled home R.J. Fernandez with two outs to break a 2-2 tie. Marvin Campbell had two hits and an RBI for Las Vegas.

• Las Vegas 8, Birmingham (Calif.) 3 -- At Las Vegas, Alex Church was 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI to lead the Wildcats past the Patriots in the Purple Division 2 semifinals.

Felix Segovia added two hits for Las Vegas.

• Campbell Hall (Calif.) 6, Boulder City 1 -- At Boulder City, the Vikings limited the Bulldogs to a run on five hits to win the Silver Division championship.

Mike Long was 2-for-3 with an RBI for Boulder City.

• Boulder City 8, Cleveland (Calif.) JV 6 -- At Boulder City, Brett Moravec had a home run and a double with two runs scored and two RBIs to lead the Eagles to the win in the Silver semifinals.

• Centennial 3, Santana (Calif.) 1 -- At Centennial, Trevor Goff went 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored as the Bulldogs defeated the Sultans in a consolation game.

• Arbor View 9, San Gorgonio (Calif.) 0 -- At Palo Verde, Dustin Hobbs threw a six-hitter to lead the Aggies over the Spartans in a consolation game.

Hobbs struck out five and increased his scoreless innings streak to 25.

• Sierra Vista 4, Flowing Wells (Ariz.) 0 -- At Sierra Vista, Matt Klein pitched a six-hitter with 11 strikeouts and no walks to lead the Lions over the Caballeros in a consolation game.

Chad Claus went 3-for-4 with three doubles, two runs and an RBI for Sierra Vista.

• Shadow Ridge 11, Banning (Calif.) 5 -- At Centennial, Bryce Pittsenbarger was 4-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs to lead the Mustangs over the Pilots in a consolation game.

Caleb Blaylock was 2-for-3 with four RBIs for Shadow Ridge.

OTHER GAMES

• Cimarron-Memorial 3, Great Oak (Calif.) 2 -- At Cimarron, Kris Kaplan singled home the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Spartans the win.

Cimarron trailed 2-0 and didn't have a hit until the seventh. The Spartans scored once on a passed ball, then got an RBI single from Nick DiLiddo to tie the game.

• Silverado 8, Bishop O'Dowd (Calif.) 7 -- At San Diego, the Skyhawks got a three-run homer from Kevin Rath and a solo shot by Pierce Belaustegui in a five-run first inning, then held on for the win in the Mike Morrow Lions Tournament.

Mike McDade went 3-for-4 with a home run for Silverado.

• University City 7 (Calif.), Spring Valley 6 -- At San Diego, the Centurions edged the Grizzlies at the Lions Tournament.

Austin Hunt went 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for Spring Valley.

• Country Day (Calif.) 5, Foothill 3 -- At Chula Vista, Calif., Country Day hit two home runs and beat the Falcons in the Lions Tournament.

• Valencia (Calif.) 12, Green Valley 3 -- At San Diego, Dylan Jones homered to help the Vikings beat the Gators in the Lions Tournament.

• Vo-Tech 7-10, Spring Mountain 0-9 -- At Vo-Tech, Ed Weist and Justin Vasquez combined on a three-hitter in the first game as the Roadrunners swept the doubleheader.

In the second game, Jason Pettit was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two stolen bases to lead the Roadrunners.

• Bishop Gorman 13, Great Oak (Calif.) 5 -- At Hadland Park, Jeff Malm was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI and John Rickard was 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a run to lead the Gaels.

• Calvary Chapel 2, Churchill County 1 -- At Warren-Walker, Cameron Harper went 2-for-3 with a double and Corey Welch threw a three-hitter with 12 strikeouts to lead the Lions.
