Dickey, Arbor View second after first day of boys state golf

The first day of the Division I boys state golf tournament at Montreux Golf and Country Club in Reno greeted players with chilly weather and high winds, making the already difficult alpine course that much harder.

The unfamiliar, tree-lined mountain course provides a unique challenge to the players from Southern Nevada, but Arbor View (417), Palo Verde (419) and Coronado (421) remain within striking distance of front-runner Bishop Manogue (414) after the first round.

“First you go from a desert environment, which we’re so used to, to the mountains,” Arbor View coach David Fish said. ”Then the wind was just swirling. It was strong, but it was hard to predict which direction it was going to go. It was a real mental game today.”

Leading the way for the Aggies was junior Sam Dickey, who finished at 4-over 76 and is second entering today’s final round.

“It was playing really hard,” Dickey said. “It’s a tough golf course to begin with, and it was blowing 20-25 miles an hour out there. The greens are really fast, but I was able to make a couple of putts coming in.”

Tournament favorite Jack Trent of Palo Verde has a one-stroke lead over Dickey, but a bogey on 18 left him disgusted.

“He played solid all day,” Palo Verde coach Todd Steffenhagen said. “But he was upset about the bogey on 18.”

Bishop Gorman’s Owen Rosebeck (77) is third, Foothill’s Andrew Chu (78) fourth and Coronado’s Jalen Hodges (79) fifth.

The final round begins at 8 a.m. today.

DIVISION I-A

Andrew Boka is listed as the No. 6 player for Faith Lutheran’s boys golf team. But the junior is peaking at the right time for the Crusaders.

Boka shot a 5-under-par 77 on a windy Monday at Old Greenwood Golf Course in Truckee, Calif., to help Faith Lutheran take the lead after the first round of the Division I-A state tournament.

The final round tees off at 10 a.m. today at the The Golf Club at Gray’s Crossing in Truckee.

Faith Lutheran shot 43-over 403, with Northern Region champion Elko second at 432. Pahrump Valley is third at 436 and Boulder City fourth at 438.

“Our scores today represent what we’ve done all year,” Crusaders coach Mark Cheney said. “It exemplifies the team approach to our scores because everyone is contributing. We never know day to day who the low score is going to be. It’s great Andrew can contribute, and he’s doing it in the biggest tournaments of the year.”

Boka, who shot a final-round 77 at Siena to finish sixth in last week’s Southern Region tournament, is tied with Boulder City’s Luke Logan and Kyler Atkinson and Fernley’s Justice Akerson for second behind Austin Ancell of Pahrump Valley. Ancell shot 73 despite winds that gusted up to 30 mph.
