Ex-UNLV running back Cornett signs free-agent deal with Cardinals

CORNETT SIGNS WITH CARDINALS; EX-GAEL GRIMBLE TO GIANTS

Former UNLV running back Tim Cornett signed as an undrafted free agent with the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday.

“They were telling me if they had a seventh-round pick, they would’ve picked me,” Cornett said. “It’s the same regardless. I have to make the team and prove myself.”

Cornett, UNLV’s career rushing leader with 3,733 yards, might have the numbers on his side. According to STATS, 530 undrafted free agents were on NFL rosters in Week 17 last season, compared with 404 players selected from the fifth to seventh rounds.

Tight end Xavier Grimble, who played at Bishop Gorman High School and Southern California, signed a free-agent deal with the New York Giants.

“I’m extremely excited,” said Grimble, who last season caught 25 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns. “It’s a dream come true. I’m elated. I had great talks with the New York Giants at the (NFL scouting) combine. I’m extremely excited to get out there. I think it’s going to be a great fit.”

Former UNLV quarterback Caleb Herring received an invitation to the Indianapolis Colts’ minicamp this week and hopes to land a free-agent deal after the tryout.

“They let me know they graded me out high on their draft board,” said Herring, who passed for 2,718 yards and 24 TDs last season.
