5 high school football games to watch this week

Here are some of this week’s most interesting high school football games.

Mojave (3-0) at Sierra Vista (3-0) — This game figures to feature some offensive fireworks. Mojave’s Ty Flanagan leads the area with 649 rushing yards and averages a ridiculous 16.2 yards per carry. Sierra Vista’s Maliek Broady isn’t far behind with 370 yards and 12.3 yards per carry. The winner probably becomes the favorite in the I-A Sunset League.

Las Vegas (2-0) at Palo Verde (1-1) — The Panthers bounced back from an opening-week loss with a win over Green Valley, and had a bye week to prepare for Las Vegas’ spread attack. Palo Verde needs to get its ground game going to eat clock and keep the ball away from the Wildcats and quarterback Trevor Swenson (360 passing yards, 7 TDs).

Foothill (1-2) at Canyon Springs (1-1) — Both teams could use a win as they look to build momentum heading into league play. Foothill’s lone victory is over winless Valley, but the Falcons did take fourth-ranked Centennial to overtime. Canyon Springs is coming off a disappointing showing against second-ranked Arbor View.

Santa Margarita (Calif.) at Bishop Gorman (4-0) — The Gaels, currently ranked No. 2 in the nation by USA Today, have dodged bullets in the last two weeks, needing overtime for a 23-20 victory over Bingham (Utah), and a late touchdown and 2-point conversion for a 43-42 victory over Centennial (Calif.). Santa Margarita quarterback K.J. Costello torched the Gaels for 438 passing yards last season though Gorman came out on top 34-31 in two overtimes. The Gaels need a win in this one for next week’s showdown with No. 1 St. John Bosco (Calif.) to really mean anything.

Cheyenne (1-2) at Faith Lutheran (1-2) — The defending I-A state champion Crusaders opened Sunset League play with a loss to Clark last week, and the Crusaders need to avoid falling to 0-2 in the tough Sunset League. A victory for Cheyenne would make the Desert Shields 2-0 in league, and would certainly help their chances to earn a playoff berth.
