A handful of college football teams won’t be sporting their usual uniforms in this week’s games as they pay tribute to Sept. 11 with special patriotic uniforms.
Brigham Young University and the University of Houston — both the Cougars — will sport special helmets with the American flag worked into their logos.
“In honor of game at BYU Thursday on 9/11, the Cougars will wear UH helmet decals with the American flag. #GoCoogs,” the University of Houston tweeted on Tuesday.
BYU surprised the players with the special helmets on Wednesday morning during its team meeting.
Maryland is taking the tribute to a whole new level with a full patriotic uniform for Saturday’s game with West Virginia - including lyrics from the Star Spangled banner worked into the jersey and helmet.
“Introducing our ‘Star Spangled’ uniforms that we’ll wear against West Virginia on Saturday,” Maryland Football tweeted on Tuesday.
Virginia Tech and the University of Nebraska-Kearney are also in the game this week with a tribute helmets.
