Over 100 moves made on NFL’s ‘new year’s day’

The NFL’s new year’s day party was a wild affair Tuesday that included some 109 transactions, including two shocking retirements, three surprising trades and a wild spree of free agent action.

Traded: Tight end Jimmy Graham from the New Orleans Saints to the Seattle Seahawks for center Max Unger; quarterback Sam Bradford from the St. Louis Rams to the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Nick Foles; and defensive tackle Haloti Ngata to the Detroit Lions.

Retired: San Francisco 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis and Tennessee Titans quarterback Jake Locker.

Free agent signings: Defensive lineman Ndamukong Suh by the Miami Dolphins, running back Frank Gore by the Indianapolis Colts, tight end Julius Thomas by the Jacksonville Jaguars and wide receiver Torrey Smith by the San Francisco 49ers.

Re-signed: Offensive tackle Bryan Bulaga by the Green Bay Packers and safety Mike Adams by the Indianapolis Colts.

In a blockbuster move, the Seahawks acquired Graham, a three-time Pro Bowler, from the Saints for Unger, a two-time Pro Bowler, and a fourth-round draft pick in 2015. New Orleans also received Seattle’s 31st pick in the first round this year.

The Rams dropped a bombshell by dealing Bradford to the Eagles for Foles. St. Louis also will get Philadelphia’s fourth-round pick in this year’s draft and a second-round pick in 2016. The Eagles get the Rams’ fifth-round pick in 2015 and a conditional pick in 2016.

If Bradford plays fewer than 50 percent of the snaps this year, the Eagles get a fourth-round pick. They get a third-round pick if he misses the entire season because of injury.

The Lions moved quickly to offset the loss of Suh to the Dolphins, acquiring Ngata from Baltimore for draft picks in a deal that freed up cap space for the Ravens.

The Buffalo Bills introduced newly acquired running back LeSean McCoy, whom they officially acquired from the Eagles for linebacker Kiko Alonso. Buffalo also revealed that the team gave McCoy a contract extension.

Willis reluctantly retired after eight seasons with the 49ers, citing foot problems that robbed him of his mobility. Locker, the eighth overall pick by the Titans in the 2011 NFL Draft, gave up the game after just four NFL seasons, saying he no longer had a burning desire to play after battling injuries.

In a move that was not yet official, cornerback Darrelle Revis reportedly agreed to return to his former team, the New York Jets, a day after the New England Patriots declined to pick up his huge contract option. ESPN reported that the Jets were giving Revis more than $40 million guaranteed.

Meanwhile, running back DeMarco Murray remained on the market, reportedly being pursued by the Dallas Cowboys, the Oakland Raiders, Jacksonville Jaguars and Philadelphia Eagles.

Free agent wide receiver Andre Johnson reportedly was talking with the Colts.
