Former Rebel Hoffman ends week in style

He didn’t catch Webb Simpson, but Charley Hoffman was just fine with a fourth-place finish Sunday in the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at TPC Summerlin.

The former UNLV standout posted a 7-under-par 64 in the final round to finish at 17-under 267, seven strokes behind Simpson, who won his fourth PGA Tour title.

“The first five holes I stuffed it,” said Hoffman, who won $288,000. “I couldn’t make anything. Then I got on a little birdie run and had another run on the back. I’m not complaining shooting 7 under.”

Hoffman had more responsibilities than the rest of the field. He hosted his charity pro-am Monday at TPC Summerlin before focusing on the tournament.

“I took the week before off, and it seemed to help me manage my time better,” Hoffman said. “I felt great all week, and I haven’t played this well here in five years.”

Hoffman, who will play in the CIMB Classic in Malaysia this week, couldn’t help but notice the improved vibe from the Shriners Open.

“I thought there was more support from the community, and the field was the best since I started playing here,” he said. “I think it’ll only get better.”

■ FINAL LOCAL RESULTS — Hoffman had the best finish of golfers with local ties. Defending champion Ryan Moore, who also played at UNLV, shot a final-round 68 and finished tied for ninth at 15-under 269. He won $162,000.

Former Rebel Chad Campbell shot 68 and tied for 36th at 275, winning $28,875. Another former Rebel, Kevin Penner, shot 69 and finished tied for 43rd at 277, winning $19,800.

Las Vegas resident Nick Watney shot 73 and tied for 48th at 278. He won $15,264.

■ COSTLY MISS — Jason Bohn cost himself $120,000 at the 18th green when he missed a 9-foot putt. Had he made it, he would have finished second by himself and made $648,000. Instead, Bohn shared second with Ryo Ishikawa, each winning $528,000.

■ HERMAN CASHES IN — Jim Herman wasn’t in the field when he woke up Thursday morning. But when Hideki Matsuyama withdrew for medical reasons, Herman, the sixth alternate, got the call he was hoping for. He made the cut Friday and shot 70 Sunday to finish tied for 57th at 280, worth $13,440.

■ FEDEX STANDINGS — Simpson picked up 500 FedEx Cup points for Sunday’s win and is second in the standings. Jimmy Walker, who finished tied for 12th Sunday, leads with 561.
