Sadekar tied for ninth in NCAA West Regional

UNLV women's golfer Seema Sadekar shot 1-over-par 72 Thursday in the first round of the NCAA West Regional in St. George, Utah, putting the senior in a tie for ninth place.

The Rebels were in 17th place, 32 shots behind leader Stanford, after shooting 35-over 319.

UNLV is in danger of missing the cut for the NCAA Championships, as only the top six teams in the 21-team field advance.

Oklahoma State's Pernilla Lindberg took the individual lead with a 3-under 68.

Also: The UNLV baseball team lost 9-4 to New Mexico in Albuquerque, ending its winning streak at four games.

Stephen Smith (6-7) got the win for the Lobos (23-25, 9-10 Mountain West), allowing 11 hits in a complete game.

Craig Heyer (5-8) took the loss for the Rebels (18-32, 7-12), giving up five runs on eight hits in five innings.

Shortstop Braden Walker was 4-for-4 for UNLV.

The UNLV softball team dropped a doubleheader to Brigham Young in Provo, Utah, losing 11-3 in six innings in the first game and 5-4 in the second.

The Cougars (40-17, 15-3 MWC) won the conference title and earned an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament.

Christina Gwyn (16-8) won both games for BYU against the Rebels (35-27, 10-8).

HORSE RACING

Curlin in good shape, will run in Preakness

Curlin will have another go at Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense in the Preakness.

Trainer Steve Asmussen said his third-place finisher in last week's Derby came out of the race in good shape and is set for the second leg of the Triple Crown on May 19.

Curlin went off as the 5-1 second choice in the Derby behind Street Sense. Robby Albarado again will be aboard the colt.

Curlin finished 5 3/4 lengths behind runner-up Hard Spun and eight lengths back of Street Sense.

Also: Jockey Laffit Pincay Jr. was awarded $2.7 million in Pasadena, Calif., in a lawsuit that claimed an ambulance company caused his career-ending injuries by failing to properly treat him after a 2003 accident.

The 60-year-old jockey broke two bones in his neck after his horse, Trampus Too, clipped the heels of Rainman's Request during the fifth race on March 1, 2003, at Santa Anita. Pincay was thrown, and his horse fell on him.

MISCELLANEOUS

Theus agrees to deal with New Mexico State

Reggie Theus and New Mexico State have agreed to a new contract that will give the third-year basketball coach the highest salary in the Western Athletic Conference.

The former UNLV star has rejuvenated the Aggies program with consecutive winning seasons after being hired following a 6-24 record in 2004-05. The Aggies finished 25-9 last season, won the WAC tournament, and played in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1999.

The new contract provides a financial package worth $466,000 per season and includes bonus opportunities.

Also: Floyd Landis claims the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's lead attorney approached his lawyer offering "the shortest suspension they'd ever given an athlete" if Landis provided information that implicated Lance Armstrong for doping.

Landis said he made the allegations public to show the lengths the USADA will go to in prosecuting athletes.

Sarah Lee tied the course record with an 8-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead over Mi Hyun Kim in the LPGA Tour's Michelob Ultra Open at Williamsburg, Va.

The NHL Players' Association fired executive director Ted Saskin two months after placing him on a paid leave of absence following allegations that he and senior director Ken Kim read players' e-mails.

IBF junior welterweight champion Lovemore Ndou will face Paulie Malignaggi on June 16 in a title bout in Uncasville, Conn.
