Softball team tops San Diego State

The UNLV softball team beat San Diego State 3-1 on Sunday at Eller Media Stadium.

The Rebels (32-19, 7-2 Mountain West Conference) scored twice in the fourth inning, including a Kendall Fearn leadoff home run. Brittany Meade later added an RBI single.

The Aztecs (27-19, 3-7) scored in the fifth to make it 2-1, but Bri Bernardi notched her second double of the day in the sixth inning, scoring Alyssia De La Torre to make it 3-1.

Christie Robinson (11-4) threw a five-hit complete game for UNLV, with five strikeouts and no walks.

Also: The UNLV baseball team surrendered grand slams to Mitch Canham in both games of a doubleheader against Oregon State, losing 10-2 and 7-0 in Corvallis, Ore.

In the opener, the ninth-ranked Beavers (31-8) had a seven-run fourth inning, including Canham's slam.

Michael Brenly and Jarred Frierson had RBI hits for UNLV (14-29) in the seventh inning.

In the second game, Canham had a pinch-hit grand slam in the fifth inning for the defending College World Series champions.

Kenyan Lel nets second London Marathon win

Kenya's Martin Lel won the men's title at the London Marathon by outsprinting three others to the finish, and China's Zhou Chunxiu won the women's title.

Lel, who also won the race in 2005, finished in 2 hours, 7 minutes, 41 seconds.

Ryan Hall, an American in his marathon debut, was the first man past the 35-kilometer (21.75-mile) mark. But he fell back and finished seventh in 2:08:24 for the fastest time by an American in a marathon debut.

Also: Parry O'Brien, whose fascination with the shot put and physics fueled a career in which he held the world record from 1953-59 and who won two gold medals and a silver medal in four Olympic Games, died at 75.

O'Brien, who revolutionized the sport by devising a new throwing technique, died Saturday while participating in a masters swim meet in Santa Clarita, Calif., the Los Angeles Times reported. His wife, Terry, said he suffered a heart attack.

British horse claims Santa Anita feature

British-bred On the Acorn beat favorite Sweet Return by 1 1/2 lengths in the $250,000 San Juan Capistrano Stakes at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, On the Acorn ran 1 1/4 miles on the turf course in 1 minute, 41.19 seconds in the closing-day feature. The 6-year-old gelding paid $7.40, $3.80 and $3.

Sweet Return returned $3.40 and $2.60, and Fitz Flag paid $4.40 to show.

Also: Janez Brajkovic of Slovenia overcame a flat tire with the help of teammates and held on for his biggest victory, winning the Tour de Georgia by 12 seconds over Christian Vande Velde.

Brajkovic surged to the lead in the fourth stage of the weeklong event, a time trial up Lookout Mountain, and held on over the last three days.

Juan Jose Haedo of Argentina outsprinted American Fred Rodriguez to win the final stage, in Atlanta.

Alexei Cherepanov and Egor Averin scored late in the third period to help Russia beat the United States 6-5 in the final of the under-18 world hockey championship in Tampere, Finland, ruining the American team's bid for a third straight title.

With a single kick to the head, Gabriel Gonzaga upset Mirko Cro Cop in the main event of UFC 70 on Saturday night in Manchester, England.
