In Case You Missed It: Obnoxious golf shop commercial hard not to love

Ladies and gentlemen, meet Mike Mixson, owner of Mike’s Golf Shop in Chattanooga, Tenn. and arguably the most brilliant marketing strategist on earth.

What did he do? He filmed a TV commercial using his camera phone and repeating the same catch-phrase,

“We buy golf clubs!” over and over again.

It’s loud. It’s obnoxious. It’s hypnotic in a can’t-turn-away sort of way.

See what I mean? Brilliant.

Mixson shot the commercial and aired it on Golf Channel in Chattanooga a couple of weeks ago. That’s where a local talk show host saw it and how it started to get attention.

“I was at my desk doing some work, and I just hear a guy shouting on TV,” Brian Joyce told Nooga.com. “I turn and it’s just a guy filming his own commercial on a flip-phone camera.”

Joyce talked about it on his radio show. Then the likes of Jimmy Fallon and Daniel Tosh caught wind of it.

And now? “I’m up about 340 percent business wise,” Mixson tells PGA.com, but “I don’t have any clue of the direction of the golf shop. I don’t have a five-year plan, I have a 24-hour plan.”

Makes sense, really, for a guy who admits he’s made “a lot of stupid videos,” but uses terms like “advertising nuclear bomb” and “marketing lightning strike.”
