Jon Stewart praises former 51s players in interview with Mets pitcher

A big Mets fan, Jon Stewart interviewed New York ace Matt Harvey on “The Daily Show” during an entertaining segment Thursday night.

After taking precautions to protect Harvey’s precious right elbow — gently placing a pillow underneath it and surrounding it with mini police barricades — Stewart, who will leave the show Aug. 6, told him, “You’re my future. You know, I’m leaving the show. You’re all I have left.”

Stewart then spoke with Harvey about the Mets’ impressive young talent core, praising former Las Vegas 51s pitchers Noah Syndergaard and Jacob deGrom while poking fun at deGrom’s long locks.

“Has anyone talked to deGrom about the idea that people don’t wear their hair like that anymore?,” Stewart asked Harvey. “In the back there, I understand maybe he’s hiding pine tar or whatever. Generally that type of hairdo would get someone suspended.

“He’s got very long and, if we’re being honest, luxurious hair.”

“Very well-conditioned,” Harvey added.

“What’s it smell like?” Stewart asked. “Is it like a peach?”

Harvey then joked the smell might not be too peachy, saying, “At one point in spring training, David Wright actually made (deGrom) wash his hair in front of other people, so he could be actually seen washing his hair for the first time in a couple days.”

Whatever deGrom’s doing is working. Since getting called up from Las Vegas last May, last year’s National League Rookie of the Year is 14-10 with a 2.70 ERA and he has 207 strikeouts in 203 1/3 innings.
