Vick charges, Stern look made for a happy week

To the sports editor:

I don't know what I loved more this past week, the fact that (Atlanta Falcons quarterback) Michael Vick was brought up on charges for dogfighting, which has to be one of the most despicable acts involving animals, or the look on the face of NBA commissioner David Stern when he had to address the media over the allegations of game-fixing by one of his referees (Tim Donaghy).

While I believe Vick will end up in prison for the dogfighting, the embarrassment caused by the scandal involving the referee sure knocked the smugness off Stern's face.

Las Vegas isn't so bad after all -- is it, Mr. Commissioner?

How could sports books allow ref's indiscretion?

To the sports editor:

If Nevada sports books are so good at monitoring cheating in sports, why didn't they discover what (NBA referee Tim) Donaghy was up to?

Most news now negative on sporting landscape

To the sports editor:

There had to be a time when the daily sports pages were filled with stories about (athletes) doing good things, not bad things. But that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

I've never been one to use (athletes) as role models. I think parents, teachers and the clergy should serve that purpose, along with those in the military, fighting a war, justly or unjustly, where their lives are on the line every day.

But it's difficult to pick up the Review-Journal sports section each day and read so much negativity. Then you throw in all the sensationalization of someone such as David Beckham, who can't even get on the field to play, and we/you have to ask ourselves/yourselves which way is sports reporting going?

PAUL ANDREWS

To the sports editor:

Everyone is writing that Barry Bonds' close friend is his personal trainer, Greg Anderson (who is in jail for refusing to testify before a grand jury regarding Bonds and allegations that the San Francisco Giants player used performance-enhancing drugs). I believe an excellent case can be made that Bonds' best friends these days are Michael Vick and Tim Donaghy.

Taaffe hits home run: Scully best in baseball

To the sports editor:

I enjoyed Bill Taaffe's "Remote Control" column Tuesday on Vin Scully ("Scully's eloquence makes him best in baseball").

The greatest thing about Vin is he could let you "watch" the game when all you had was a radio to listen to.

HENDERSON

To the sports editor:

Bill Taaffe's column on Vin Scully was as good as it gets. I am going to copy it and, with a cover note, send the copies to the New York Yankees radio announcers and a copy each to Yankees owner George Steinbrenner and general manager Brian Cashman.

As you know, the Yankees get a lot of national exposure with ESPN and the YES Network, and being the team they aspire to be, it is only right that they have first-class representation with their house announcers.

My recommendation is they all -- all teams -- require their announcing teams to attend "The Vin Scully School of Announcing Baseball."
