Lorde, George Brett have a ‘Royals’ meeting

Lorde was an aspiring songwriter in New Zealand when she spotted a picture of Kansas City baseball star George Brett in his uniform and drew the inspiration for the megahit, “Royals.”

So, where else besides Las Vegas would the long-awaited meeting between the two take place?

Yes, the Hall of Fame baseball player showed up backstage for the superstar teenager’s concert at the Cosmopolitan this week.

Brett was in town on a golfing vacation and decided it was as good a time as any to drop by and finally meet Lorde, an introduction that has been discussed since the singer revealed last year her hit song was born from an old National Geographic photo of Brett.

Brett’s career ended in 1993, three years before Lorde was born. The generational gap didn’t preclude him from being familiar with her music, though.

“I actually downloaded her music off iTunes and listened to it on the plane ride to Vegas. I knew all the songs when she sang them,” Brett told TMZ. “Lorde is such a sweet little girl. She’s only 17 years old and she’s very talented.”

Brett and Lorde apparently got along quite well.

“We both said it was nice to meet each other,” he told the website. “She told me about looking through the National Geographic and seeing the picture [of me from 1976] and cutting it out and putting it on her wall.”

Brett was clearly honored by the story of how the song came about. He’s also probably relieved he wasn’t instead the inspiration for a Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus song.
