Four days before he defends the world welterweight championship, Floyd Mayweather Jr. said he is one year away from retirement.
After Saturday’s rematch against Marcos Maidana in Las Vegas, Mayweather, 37, plans to fight in May 2015 and September 2015.
“I only got two more fights left (following Saturday), and after the next two fights I just want to build the Mayweather Promotions brand,” Mayweather said Tuesday in Las Vegas. “Every day you don’t feel the same, but as of right now, my focus is Maidana.
“I can’t focus on the other two fights after that. I have to focus on Maidana. After that, we can’t say who’s the next two are going to be, but I’m pretty sure the next two will be exciting fights. …
“A year from now will be my last fight.”
Mayweather (46-0, 26 knockouts) earned a majority decision over Maidana (35-4, 31 KOs) in May.
According to ESPN.com, Mayweather’s six-fight, $200 million contract with Showtime/CBS would end with the September 2015 bout if Mayweather sticks to his proposed schedule.
Mayweather Promotions chief executive Leonard Ellerbe reacted positively to Mayweather’s retirement talk.
“I’m happy. He deserves it,” Ellerbe said, according to ESPN.com. “He’s put in the work his whole career. Grinding, done everything the fans have asked of him. He’s had a remarkable career. It’s time to hang ‘em up. Made all the money you can make. What else is there to do in the sport? There’s nothing else to prove.”
