Johnson wins second straight at Bullring

The last time Justin Johnson won he wasn't able to celebrate in victory lane.

A week ago, he wasn't declared the winner of the Super Late Models feature at Las Vegas Motor Speedway until a day later.

Johnson was the second to cross the line on April 7, but apparent winner Jimmy Parker Jr. was disqualified when his car was four pounds too light in post-race inspection.

Johnson made up for the lost opportunity by dominating the 40-lap Super Late Models feature Saturday night, taking the checkered flag for his second consecutive victory in the NASCAR All-American Series at the speedway's Bullring.

"It was disappointing that Jimmy got disqualified for only four pounds, but we'll take them however we can get them," Johnson said after his first on-track Bullring win this year.

Johnson took the lead on the 15th lap from Parker, who had led from the start after earning the pole by winning the Fast Dash heat. Travis Swalwell finished second and opening-night winner Tom Lovelady was third.

Once Johnson took the lead no one came close to catching him. He built a lead nearly as long as a straightaway on the three-eighth-mile oval, but it was erased twice by two caution periods in the second half of the race.

"It's about consistency and hitting your marks," he said. "They say consistency wins races and that's what I did.

"I never looked in my mirror and just focused on me and the track."

He wouldn't have seen anyone behind him if he had glanced at his rearview mirror. It was the most dominating performance of the young season.

The race ended in a two-lap shootout after the final yellow, and Johnson still was able to win by 1.255 seconds.

In a visit by the USAC Ford Focus Midget Series, Tim Skoglund of Fresno, Calif., took the lead on the seventh lap and led the final 23 to win.

Other winners were: Craig Stewart (IMCA Modifieds), Brian Matzke (Chargers), Nick Parmelee (Legends Cars) and Roger Hocking (Thunder Roadsters).

Ron Capps won a special eight-lap Thunder Roadster exhibition race with three fellow NHRA Funny Car drivers. Tommy Johnson Jr. was second followed by Gary Scelzi and Cruz Pedregon.
