No logo on Hall of Fame cap for Greg Maddux

When Greg Maddux is inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame on July 27, his plaque will reveal a cap without a logo. He played 11 seasons in Atlanta, where he won a World Series ring. But he also spent 10 years in Chicago playing at Wrigley Field. The Hall of Fame left it up to the former Valley High School star which cap he wanted on his plaque that will stand in perpetuity in Cooperstown, N.Y.
“My wife Kathy and I grew up in baseball in Chicago, and then we had just an amazing experience in Atlanta with the Braves,” Maddux said in a statement. “It’s impossible for me to choose one of those teams for my Hall of Fame plaque, as the fans of both clubs in each of those cities were so wonderful.
“I can’t think of having my Hall of Fame induction without support of both of those fan bases, so, for that reason, the cap on my Hall of Fame plaque will not feature a logo.”
Maddux’s decision was his to make. But he’s not going to be the first to go logo-less. According to the Hall, 75 players don’t have a logo on their cap, the most recent modern player being pitcher Jim “Catfish” Hunter, who was inducted in 1987 and opted not to go in as either an Oakland Athletic or a New York Yankee.
As for the other inductees, Tom Glavine, who was Maddux’s teammate in Atlanta, will go in as a Brave while Frank Thomas, who spent most of his years with the White Sox along with Oakland and Toronto, will go in with a White Sox cap.
